Once again, the age old case of "Sorry there was no one in to receive your parcel, you can collect it from the office in 2 days time."

Here's to the good, honest posties at Royal Mail who do their job properly and actually knock to see if someone is in to receive the parcel, as opposed to just sticking a card through the door, as they are few and far between.

I've a good Royal Mail & Parcel Force posties (almost first name terms) they will knock & wait almost 5 mins before either leaving a card or if its small/light enough they'll pop it thru the window (RM postie that is)...

He does check it first for how heavy & if fragile thou.... Also they'll knock upto 2 doors away to try & leave it there with a neighbour...

If I am out & return to have a "sorry" card left then I phone & get it redelivered for the next day otherwise get it redelivered at the weekend.....

My neighbour gets tons of parcels all the time (always retro video games like NES etc) and if he's out they'll always knock our door and leave it with us. HOWERVER.. if I order something, they never will, and I have to lug my ass down to town to pick it up.

and how many times have I heard " I was in but the postman didn't knock" when people ring up to moan :bang:
Bear in mind that the card is written on the doorstep so it's not a case of knock and run, damn things take ages to fill out.
Also these new lcd signing screens have GPS in them and we get a slap if something isn't signed at the correct address, believe me in my office we can't even collect our own stuff it has to go out on delivery first knowing no one is at home, that's efficiency and progress for you :cuckoo:

I have always wondered about that....

It's all to do with gps tracking, if we collect or sign in the office it fails as mis-delivered so has to go through the system first

What the card they have to write the name on, tick to say its been taken back to the post office or left somewhere and then date it?

What most people don't realise is that the parcel, if with a normal postie isn't always sent out depending on the load that day. Card is written, dropped off with the mail for you to pick up at your convenience.

Little puzzled by your reply, are you suggesting that the postie did his job and I just didn't hear?

Not down here, we have a clear office policy, which means everything has to be taken out

Let me give a scenario that happened to me :

Door open and voices in the back, I need a signature so ring bell, no response, knock hard, no response, call out, no response, someone comes downstairs looks at me and walks straight out, I write out a card and leave, what else can I do .
Next day get given the item to redeliver with the comment "she said they were in" !!! Not disputing that but why didn't someone come to the damn door :bang:

Because it's true? at my mother's house, she's got a big heavy brass knocker on the door. You can hear it through the whole house when somebody knocks, but countless times she's walked through the hall to find a card on the carpet after having heard nothing.

Bear in mind that the card is written on the doorstep so it's not a case of knock and run, damn things take ages to fill out.
Before now, I've seen one park up outside the house, sit in his van, fill out the form, then walk up to the door and post it without ever knocking.

I don't see how a couple of ticks, a date and a name takes all that long to fill out though. :)

I'm not saying all posties are like that. Our local one is great, my mother's is absolutely awful.

I know from personal experience that if it's bulky object the postman will often leave the parcel behind at the sorting office and just stick a "sorry yoou were out" card through the door

I got a card at the weekend. We were in, and waiting for the delivery. On the card there is a space for the reference number so that you can go online or phone up their premium rate number (if you're rich enough) to ask them to redeliver. BUT..you need the number. Guess what? Yup, postie CBA coming back so he left the number off. 10 mile trip each way just because postie is a lazy b******

That sucks, but I heard nothing apart from the post come through the door, go to check, and there the card is. Not acceptable.

Well, between 7dayshop and Royal Mail, I've been done proud! Ordered a few odds'n'sods from 7day last thursday evening and they arrived this morning. The package was small enough to go through the slot but if it isn't, our normal postie leans it against the door, rings the bell then picks it up again and leaves a card if the package is still there. Obviously, if it needs a signature, he doesn't just leave it there but for normal stuff, I'm happy with what he does. Of course, sometimes he takes a break and the replacement is not so good. He delivers stuff for our neighbours to us as well as mail for the same number but different roads.

Did you try and grab the postie?

Nope, picked up the mail, took it into the kitchen, checked through it, saw the card, went back to the door and opened it, postie no where to be seen :(

Ours depends on which postie. Some I know don't even ring the bell as the computer is around 2 feet from the door and so come on I think I would hear even a hand knock on the door. But there is one or two who know me and my dad personally and so leave parcels in a safe place (Even if a few times they haven't left a card saying its there).

our postie is ace lol

or our several lol - work postie actually

1st postie is jsut standrad letters - normally signs so we dont have to - this saves us both time

2nd postie is the big parcel one he signs again

the 3rd postie for collection is spot on he has actually brought me stuff that was meant to be delivered to me in the morning

and the gps do work well on them machines well interlink's do

i recently had a argument with a customer about a parcell being delivered it only got found when we tracked it down by gps and the original driver went to go abck and collect it that it was suddenly found

We are lucky to have a good postman and good neighbours so don't often get the dreaded card.

I live in a high rise on a street. our address starts with the name of the building, then the street. No end of times has our postie delivered our letters to the street and not noticed or bothered to look at the letter to see that our building block is named first. With all the above comments i really cant see how they have the front to go on strike or act surprised when private companies want to buy royal mail out.

Many times I've "missed a delivery" that hasn't been knocked for. Occasionally I "miss a delivery" and don't get a red card too...

I have seen the red card come through the door without anyone knocking, but by the time I turn the wheelchair on, get there etc postie has gone :( - usually in a van! (ie, those delieveries are usually from a van, my usual posie is ok and waits a little extra for me if I need it, after I spoke to him.

Our current postie is quite good, always rings and knocks, also if its a signed for item and fits through the letter box it goes through whether we are there or not , Im not sure if I like/hate this though ie u pay more for signed for but at the same time I dont have to go to the delivery office.

I have only ever had 1 result with royal mail and that was in my last place at christmas, got a card through the door in early December, different name and the house number was unreadable so couldnt re-deliver, there was no return address so I opened it to see if there was any way of finding out who it could be sent back to. It turned out to be a card for a royal mail employee ( didnt know them) and had £15 of stamps in for them to use at christmas :D needless to say I actually sent my cards out that year

cant say ive ever had any issues with RM. regularly send orders and ebay sales out and often receive in ebay orders etc.

havent had a "you were not home" card for donkeys.

citylink and the other couriers however......

It's easy to knock the RM.

It'll be interesting to see how people feel about them in retrospect, 5 years down the line once it has all been privatised.

I'm not sure I'd trust ******link or ****UPS with my important post!

probably not, but at least you wont have to worry about them striking every 5 minutes

I deal with UPS a lot and they are spot on, I can track my kit on and off vans, from depot to depot and if I'm in I always get my parcel.
Their local depot is 7 miles away but thats no hassle really.

I won't knock my postie either, he wears 2 hearing aids and you know when he's knocking but then again so does half the street.

My only gripe is the growing mountain of red rubber bands in my garden LOl

I have had to wait 9 days for a parcel to get back to the depot 1 mile away but thats a very very rare occurrence. I think the donkey had a limp that week.

Well I live in the flat, so frankly all delivery services are flaky at best down here. Infact RM are one of the most reliable ones since the postie knows his way around, I just had one weird case where I didn't receive any parcels for about a month and then they all just turned up!

Hope you all watched Going Postal on Sky 1 that should explain everything :D
