I remember reading a while back about a vulnerability in routers but I think it was only if someone got access to your router admin interface, therefore a limited risk for 'normal' home users.
Can anyone remember the details and whether it is something that the 'average Joe' really needs to worry about?
My router is an Asus.

All you can do is ensure firmware is up to date and change the default user name and password as a normal user. If your more IT savvy you can change default addresses etc, but it makes trouble shooting more difficult to anyone lose if you have issues later...

User & P/W is changed but the only firmware update is in beta and I'm a bit reluctant to try that.

Interesting Guardian article.....my router make is not listed and though I could/should make the password more complex I also from the very beginning used a none default IP address range.

PS also FWIW my internet security program Eset scans the router on demand.

A very good thing for Asus routers is to install the appropriate version of Asuswrt-Merlin firmware if there is one for your router. Merlin's mods sometimes make it back into the official WRT releases so Asus are obviously happy with what he's doing.

Not supported unfortunately.
