Router set up for big house

Personally I'd buy a switch and some if these linky for all those that can't get a signal.

Is this a permanent installation? Can you route ethernet wires around the floors or is it wireless only?

12 months - pretty permanent - lol...

Budget? And what's it for? Do the 9 people need to do a lot of sharing between each others computers or is this to simply share a single internet connection? If just sharing an internet connection, what sort of speed is it - fast fibre or dead slow ADSL that's miles from the exchange?

Budget would be max £150 I think, no sharing between computers just sharing internet connection. Probably looking to go with VM 30 or 60mbps package I think

Assuming everyone has wifi, you could try an Asus RT-N66U. As of 6 months ago - when I checked last - it was about the most powerful wi-fi router you could get at a sensible price. Dual band and 3 channels at a time, so you have plenty of bandwidth. Should hook directly into the VM ethernet socket.

You could always upgrade your antenna to something like a Linksys high gain antenna and put a repeater in the house in areas where signal is weak. Obviously the repeater has to go where the signal is OK to extend the range to where it nis weak.

Mmmm four floors, huge scope for wireless deadspots especially the further from the router you get (obviously this will vary with how the house is constructed).

It's hard to say how many but I'd say you'll definitely need repeaters.

If it was longer than 12 months I would have advised laying some CAT 5e or CAT 6, but here's some tips for wireless.

1. If you are getting VM in to install a new connection, ask they they install it in the second or third floor, as it is more likely that you will get a string signal.

2. Choose a router which supports 5 GHz and choose this as the only configured frequency if all devices support it. You'll likely find less interference on 5 GHz.

3. Move the router away from external walls and place on a shelf or similar. Avoid placing on it near metal objects.

4. Add home plugs and/or wireless repeaters.

Multiple Wireless access points, could use repeaters, but ideally get them connected via ethernet to the router.

Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. My plans at the moment will be, let me know what you think:

1 x Asus RT-N66U installed on the 2nd floor (possibly wall mounted high up) http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-N66U-Wireless-streaming-Warranty/dp/B007W16SMO

1 x TP-Link AV500 Powerline adapters fitted on the 4th floor http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA4...=1368711429&sr=1-1&keywords=plug+wifi+500mbps

1 x Buffalo Airstation Access Point on the 4th floor plugged into the powerline adapter http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-Air...68711899&sr=1-1&keywords=buffalo+access+point

Also with this set-up if we set-up QoS to limiting downloading and also a media drive to store music etc attached to the RT-N66U would this all still work exactly the same through the adapters and access point?
Yes. They act as wireless or mains bridges to Ethernet.

I personally would try and do an ethernet cable from the 2nd floor and not to use powerline. I've used powerline and it is not as reliable. Sods law when I am away it stops working and my missus can't sort it out and it has to wait for me to come home.

If you can do it that is.

Okay I'll speak to the landlord as it could be something they could think about permanently installing as it is such a big house
