Roughing up your camera a bit?

If I have to wrap cardboard from a disposable camera, or any other cardboard for that matter, around my point and shoot camera then I'll just leave it at home and get another hobby! This talk is just ridiculous!

Gardening is good

A little OT, but a roadworn guitar at a gig is the equivalent of a sepia print - an attempt to create an impression of age that generally doesn't work.

I'm not in favour of relicing, but I rather suspect it's a reaction to the super-glossy and incredibly tough finishes many manufacturers put on their guitars, Fender being one of the most guilty in this respect. The finishes are so tough that it's really hard to generate noticeable wear outside of the odd chip or ding after 10 years of playing hard, and remain glossy against all odds. If you don't like a hard gloss finish then relicing can work well, although it's easy to overdo things. A good half-way position is to use a scotchbrite pad on a glossy finish to give a satin nitro-style sheen and lose the stickiness - quite popular for a while on Epi Les Pauls.

Personally I always try to keep my gear - music and photographic - in the best condition possible, but sometimes a little wear is unavoidable.

A man after my own heart

I'll send you a link to a video (if i remember tomorrow) from Roger Waters about all the gear his band use. It's pretty clear what's of value and what's just tat.

I'm all in favour of not turning my nose up at used gear but I'm not one for getting brand new fake weathered gear just to make myself look tme served.

Tape is *so* girly! Real men use spray paint!

You can buy this camera armour type skins which sort of disguises it a bit.

I have the silicone armour for my D800e.. Its great & keeps the camera from minor wear & tear..

On the other hand, I've been taking pics for almost 40 years with Contax and Nikons and never had a problem.
I've been around the world and visited more countries than you could shake a stick at

As the cops keep saying, 24 hour news channels and the sensationalist newspapers and websites have caused the perceived risk of crime to be be almost as scary as a real crime.

Totally agree the level of fear in this country at the minute is ridiculous.

I walked round Rio with a 5d mkii over my shoulder on it's original strap and never felt threatened more than I would in Central London. Your very unlucky to be a victim of crime at home or abroad get insurance and remember your camera is easily replaced if some one asks for it abroad give it to them your a long time dead.

Out of interest, who on this thread has had their gear stolen, other than due to a house, or even car, burglary?

All stupid.

No matter how much blanking off logos, or "relicing" (whatever the **** that means) is done... you can't hide the fact that you're carrying an expensive camera. Why would ANYONE want to harm the resale value of expensive gear, just through fear of being mugged one day? Man up!!... take out insurance, get on with it!

If you get all weak at the knees at the thought of being mugged, then sit in your house all day, never leave, and live vicariously through Second Life or something.

Having "roughed up" gear does not make you look cool... it does not make you look like a "professional". It makes you look like an idiot.... and it most definitely will NOT stop people mugging you. Just use your common sense. Walk around in Hackney at 3am with 3 grand's worth of gear, then yeah.... you'll probably get mugged. You reckon they'll stop and go, "Beggin' your pardon guv'.... I see you have neither a Nikon or a Canon, so I'll be on my way instead of beating you senseless.... good evenin' to you Sir".

Yeah!!.... I thought for a minute that was an expensive SLR camera.... but upon close inspection, as I can't see a brand name, it's obviously only worth 50p. Incidentally, most crack heads walking along Mare St at 3am would happily mug you for 50p anyway!

[PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]!!

Get real!.... and stop being such a bunch of big girl's party dresses. :)
