Rough around edges

It looks a little over processed to me, the magenta in the cloud looks like you have pushed the hue or magenta saturation too far. The smudgy halo round the lighthouse at first i would have said you have oversharpened, but not so sure now, can you break down how you processed the image?

Steve thank you for some feed back i appreciate it.
A lesson learned today as I have no idea what I did really and know i will have to start keeping notes as I go.

I know I started in photoshop to allow me to use the shadow and highlight sliders as I don't have them in my version of Lightroom
I then went back to Lightroom to follow a tutorial but got carried away :)
It was only when I zoomed in to sharpen the lighthouse i noticed that the edge of the lighthouse was as if the paint had run into the surrounding area

Have to say I must have the most pictures of this lighthouse ever! but i never just get one that looks right.
I am not giving up until I get one I can print lol!
Good job I stay 20 mns away

To be honest Cath, I think the problem with this image is that it is not that good to begin with. Don't take that comment too hard it's just that you do not have very good light or conditions and you have tried to tart it up by pushing the processing.
We are all guilty of this, I know I have gone through this and still do from time to time but when you get your timing right and the light is dramatic then the shot will be there and processing should be just to enhance an already great image.

I understand you were using this for practice and this is not a finished image for critique so I am not knocking your work here ;)

You might find this image works better in black and white with a bit of dodging and burning on the sky to add drama. It may have worked as a long exposure to smooth out the sea.
Keep going back, watch the forecast and you will get that great shot

Steve thank you and yes you are right it is not a good example.

:( this is why I keep going back and fingers crossed one day soon.

I am just using these to get to grips with Lightroom. I like the idea of trying it in black and white and I will have a go at that too once I work my way through doing it in colour. I just wanted to find out if anyone knew what I did to cause the odd edges of the light house.

Talking of weather are there tips to tell when you should take a good sunset or sunrise as I just go down when I can and it is dry.
Should I be waiting for more clouds and a clear sky?

I am hoping to get better before I go off to the western isles later in the year as I hope to capture some nice shots there.

I think the only way to attempt to predict a nice sunrise or sunset is to use The photographers Ephimeris to predict what angle and time the sun rises. If you follow the line out it shows where the sun will be when it first rises over your location ( for example over the North Sea)
Then you can use a cloud prediction map off the internet and you are looking for clear skies where the sun will be at sunrise, with some high level cloud at your location.
Never really had any success with it really and I just go with pot luck.
Also, you can still get dramatic skies if its dark and moody, you just need a lucky shaft of light in the right place....

Steve I have that app just have not worked it out yet but I will.

I will also have a look at the cloud maps
Thank you for your help i have taken it all on board:)
