Yes
Hi I have an ADSL Briadband Modem Ethernet rooter which connects to the internet but lately I have to keep pressing the button at the back to reboot it or I can't get on the internet. I am with TalkTalk and I rang up their technical line but I couldn't understand what the Indian woman was saying.

She at first asked me the model and the number then said Talk Talk couldn't recognise the number, and I would have to call my service provider. I said it had their name on it.

Then they asked me to ring back on my mobile while they checked the line. I said I didn't have much credit and she said someone could come to my house at a cost of £49, so I opted to use my mobile and had to go through all the options again and ended up with a different person, so I had to explain everything again.

Can you tell me how I can get the modem repaired and if it could be wearing out. The woman said she could talk me through it as I said I wasn't technically minded. This is going to be complicated, seeing as I can't understand what she is saying.

Not all the lights are lite on the modem and the light that shows I am connected is orange, while only the power button is green all the others are orange.

Many thanks and hope you can help me?

Have you by any chance started connecting an android phone or tablet to it lately?
This seems to cause problems with some routers.
Android has some issues with its DHCP implementation, that upsets some routers.

Hi its a SmartAX MT882 router but when it does connect not all the lights are lit. The power button is green, while the button that shows that I am connected is orange. Thanks.

Communicating with Talk Talk can be a bit frustrating. Apart from language/accent issues, their basic support staff just seem to follow a checklist.

Have you checked the router configuration? You'll need the user name and password, and someone to talk you through the settings if you don't have a copy of them. Talk Talk can give you these, if you get the right person and make a nuisance of yourself, but they seem reluctant to do so.

That's the problem, talking to them is frustrating because of the language barrier. i would go with someone else if I knew ho was better. How do I checked router configuration? Thanks.

If you phone up their customer care and explain the communication problem, they will transfer you to the Irish technical office.

Yes but you have to go through the customer care folk.

Moan like hell about leaving due to poor help etc. etc.

I might just do that because I can't understand what they are saying.

the orange light does sound like the ADSL is working correctly..

http://help.talktalk.co.uk/app/answ...o-the-lights-on-my-smartax-mt882-router-mean?

does the orange light ever go off? first thing i would suggest is make sure each phone socket that has a device/phone plugged in has a NEW microfilter.

if it passed a line test its probably either the kit or local wiring.

TalkTalk said they were going to ring me back and tell me if there was a fault with the line, but they havn't as yet.

Which orange light do you mean?

I have swapped routers, but I still had to push the button at the back to reboot to connect. Do you think its time for a new modem as this one dates from 2007!*

Is the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router any good and can i use it even through i have an account with TalkTalk?*

that one.

ah right so we dont know the outcome of the line test yet, it should only take a short amount of time so would be worth a shout back for the result.

You can use whatever router you want, however, if the router is duff, they should send you out a new one.

Think it may be my modem giving up the ghost. They gave me a number to ring and to quite 'loyalty' what ever that means?

I imagine you are using a modem router so, before you try anything else, give this a go. Make sure the router is connected to the computer - wireless or ethernet cable - and powered up, then type http://192.168.1.1 into the address line in your web browser. There's no www. This will take you to the start screen. Enter 'admin' for the username and password (these are the defaults and will probably be printed on the router, you will have to enter your own if you have changed them) and it should take you into the configuration screens. Follow the link in Post 8, and check that every setting is exactly the same, then save and exit. That will reconfigure your router without having to go through the whole set up process again, and may work.

Its not letting me in for some reason

I'm with TalkTalk and I never had any success ringing helplines! Go into their members forum and post there. I did that about slow broadband speeds and had a reply and things sorted in a few days.

http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/index.php

(If you do post - just wait and don't repost on your thread - it can take a day for them to get to the posts and new posts can put your thread back down the list.)

OK. Do you mean it's not accepting the IP address?

No I put in my TalkTalk details and its not accepting it. I am thinking of going over to Plus net in the future. What do you think of those, are they better then TalkTalk?

If the router isn't accepting the settings, there's either something wrong with it or the line. Can you borrow another router and run set up on it? That might, at least, narrow down the problem.

I don't live in the UK all the time, and I'm afraid I don't anything about the other ISPs. I'm using my wife's Talk Talk connection at the moment, and she chose them because there wasn't much choice in this part of rural Scotland when she set it up. It seems to have been fine, apart from two outages in about 6 years, which were a pain to resolve due to the communication problems with their call centre. I'm sure others will suggest something, or you could look for user reviews on the internet?

Exactly the problem I had when I spoke to the Indian woman, whom I couldn't understand what she was saying as the accent got in the way. :bang:

I know. I really couldn't care less whether the person at the other end of the line is Indian, Russian, English or whatever; but it's ridiculous that customers in this country who are having problems - which can be quite technical - are forced to deal with incomprehensible accents and/or a poor command of English, on top of a refusal to depart from their script. It's not only Talk Talk of course, call centres have been rated as one of the biggest stress factors in dealing with a lot of businesses now.

Dont put in your talktalk details.
put

ADMIN for username
PASSWORD for password (or this might be admin too)

those exact words.
Unless you have changed the defualt router settings, this will get you in, not in caps though.

What has your wife done to other ISPs that make them not want to supply you? ;) :D

I wondered that - the only part I trust BT with is the copper wire and a virtual path to my ISP... If your phone line is BT (as would seem likely in SW Scotland - guessing D&G) you have a choice of dozens if not hundreds of ISPs - yes using the BT line but not BT Broadband.

from the manual what you have is a asdl modem and not a router.
you may have already tried what i am going to suggest

1) have you cange the ethernet cable
2) tried a different computer o n the modem
3) done a virus / spyware scan
4) tested the computer on anther network if its a laptop.
5) checked the line filters , by schanging them.
6) have you exceed the max power on the phone system (REN)

Cheers Steve

One thing I would like to ask is… I can’t find the software listed for my TalkTalk modem so if I got the new modem and installed the CD that came with it, would it override the old information of my old modem and replace it with the new settings.

I am unsure if it would do this, thanks.

Have you not
got through to the Irish folk yet?

No still Indians, probably speak to the cowboys next.

I wasn't winding you up.

Really and truly, phone up the customer help folk, moan a bit and they will put you through to folk in Ireland.

They will take you through things step by step and get you sorted out in no time.

I know that  I am a bit worried that the new modem (wireless one) won't work with my pc. Do you think it will come with cables etc?
