When posting some of my images in the Bird section some people have commented on the PP not being quite right. I am not disagreeing with them; I am trying to find out if there is a reason for it.
I do the majority of PP late at night (insomnia) but sometimes I do it during the day.
So I was wondering if the ambient light in the room would affect how I see things on my monitor. Could that be the reason why some images look OK but others seem to lack contrast, slightly overexposed and lack of vibrancy.

Could be the answer. You really need to have the ambiant light similar during the night as during the day..

A quick test is to work on a few images during the day, and a few (different) ones at night.

Now view them side by side at night and by day. Do you see the differences you are talking about.

Decide what condition gives the results you should be getting and then adjust the lighting level to achieve this. It my require blinds, for day viewing of more light for night time. Do the test first and see what the results are

I would say a simple option is a Pantone Huey system. I leave mine plugged in and it constantly checked the ambient rooms conditions and adjusts the screen. Then every two weeks or when I have a big batch on, recalibrate before I start.

Takes more than a few minutes to do it and keeps your work constant.

As a first step, is your monitor calibrated?

With regards to room lighting, I have blackout blinds and a 6,500K lightbulb in my editing room, so the lighting is always the same.
