Hello all, I'm going to be taking my girlfriend away somewhere for her birthday next feb but would like a few suggestions from your good selves if possible? I would like somewhere private so not a b+b or anything like that, I took her to paris last year so that maybe hard to beat lol. Thanks for any suggestions given.

I had a great weekend a few years ago driving to Champagne, we had one night in a hotel an hour or two East of Calais and a couple of nights in Champagne itself. I find UK hotels are very expensive compared to French ones.

I've suggested these to a few people on here before, They're in the highlands of scotland so could be quite a trek for you, also in February, the weather could have be an issue (in terms of getting there) but, you may fancy them some other time, so I'll suggest it anyway :D

we've stayed here a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. only 12 lodges, each self contained and sleeps 2.

To be honest.. you could have a better quality of hotel, better food and for less money having a European city break than staying in the UK. The UK hotel market is grossly over-priced.

I'm not sure about February (we normally go in the summer) but I can highly recommend Berlin..

Nice one Andrew, just rang to see if they take dogs which they do!

We have just had a great week at Tralee Bay near Oban but fancy going a bit further up.

You won't regret it, we've been twice, my other half's Parents have since been twice, and we're hoping to get back next year.

It's run by a couple who are approachable and friendly, The lodges are comfortable and clean. Usually you're given the key, left to sort yourself out for half an hour to an hour then one of them will come along, introduce themselves and check you've everything you need. Really is a friendly and quiet place.

Hope you enjoy it :) - Sure you will :D

York is a nice place to go, as is Stratford, Chester etc.

Dedham, on the Essex/Suffolk boarder. Nice and quiet. Milsoms is a small modern hotel with a great restaurant. They have a few places from there, one called The Maison Talbooth Hotel which is v nice. Another is their sister restaurant Le Talbooth is a 2 minute walk round the corner, and I think it has a Michelin star. Stunning surroundings.

Yeah it's crap York, That Minster, waste of time, railway museum, load of old trains, who wants to see them, The Shambles bloody right, they look like they're falling down.

I've heard they do a nice cake in Pontefract though :D

We`ve stayed at Romney Bay House a few times and always had an excellent time. b****r all to do but eat, drink and :D The food is wonderful, as are the owners. It`s not cheap, but it is worth every penny.

Wow lots of great reccomendations to look at. I didnt think I would get this many responses. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I think at this moment in time I'm leaning towards the log cabin - wood fire - Scotland idea but with it being in February when were going I'm not too sure about traveling up there. If theres snow its going to be a non starter. Its nice to have so many options though! :)

walworth castle. near darlington not the first thing that spings to most peoples minds but it is great there... book a romantic retreat the area around there is ust fab honest they really are..

We stayed in a superb Welsh valley last year. A truly beautiful place just outside Llangollen. They have a lovely one bed cottage with fireplace etc or a 4 bedroom house right on the side of a valley. Both are a nice country walk away from a farm that sells the nicest lamb I have ever tasted. The house has a huge open fireplace and is beatiful an plush. All 5*. Stunning Kitchen and all ensuite. It snowed when we were they (it frequently does) and it was just magical sitting by a crackling fire with fresh lamb cooking away!

Let me know if you want more details.

Thanks for the reccomendation Terri!

We found them through Cottages4u, but contact them direct for cheapest price - http://www.worldsendcottage.co.uk/ is the one be cottage.

http://www.fronlwyd.co.uk/ is the four bed.

Get the durations worth of supplies, some cash for the farm meat, some films, your walking boots, a thick jumper each, and finally some red wine and you are all set :)
