I am wondering if anyone can offer opinion as to whether the Rogue Flashbender is a viable alternative to, say, the Demb product?

Thanks.

Welcome to TP :)

Yes, Rogue FB is a great product, mainly due to its versatility, but you have to know how to use it.

It is highly dependent on the environment, like all these flash accessories. They work by bouncing the light off a ceiling or walls, which turns the hard (small) flash light coming from an unflattering direction, into nice soft (large) light coming from a more natural direction. They are often called flash diffusers, but they're actually more flash deflectors - it's the bounce surface that does the diffusing.

Thanks, Hoppy!

I'm only just starting to experiment with flash and, at this stage I don't want to spend huge amounts in case I don't get much call for it.

The nice thing with the fb is you aren't dependent on a wall or ceiling to bounce off. Point flash straight up and use the fb to curve over the top and the while panel becomes a diffuse light source ( Or a pointy one depending on how you bend it).
I think they're great, very versatile.

You can use a flashbender to:
  • deflect the flash towards a ceiling or wall
  • Just use the flashbender surface if no suitable surface is available
  • create a snoot for tailoring light
It's a great product and takes up no space

Thanks for all the replies

Phil V, do you use one on your wedding shoots?

You can also add in extra bits if you feel the need to such as the extra panel for the front to creat a small softbox and you can buy grids too. Whether they're as good a tool as they (rogue) make them out to be I have no idea.

Great tool, i use it occasionally with the diffuser and used it as a flag the other day. Value for money wise its great!

You can get the small one from Currys for £21 if you order it on the internet. Or at least you could last week.
I don't do a lot of work with flash but these are great, flexibility for a very small outlay. I got mine from Currys a couple of weeks ago, free delivery too.
