I am in the process obtaining b&w dev gear for my stepdaughter who lives in Wakefield West Yorkshire.

She is going to learn dev skills from me whilst out here on holiday next month.

Although I can pass on certain items to her, she will need to purchase chems herself back in the UK.

I presently use LC29 but as it deteriorates once opened, I think perhaps something more like Rodinal may suit her better ( I've read somewhere that it keeps better?!!) and I believe it is cheaper!

Maybe you guys have more suitable suggestions?

I was looking at getting hold of whichever dev I recommend to her simply so she can use the same one whilst learning with me....if i can get hold of it now then I can have a dabble with it before her arrival!

In addition, where is there in the Wakefield, Leeds areas that she obtain chems?

Dales photographic in Leeds sell some Ilford stuff but i dont think they do Rodinal or LC29. Most people in F&C buy online so it may be worth getting some off t'internet. AG photographic have Rodinal for about £9 for 500ml, which should do over 50 rolls :)

OK Rob thanks for that ...... Just had a quick look at AG......sems they have cheap film too ...Kentmere. I've never heard of it but sounds ideal for her learning process.

With the rodinal, is there a particular fixer you would recommend, or just pick up the best deal at the time?

As for stop, I very rarely use anything but water ..... that's what I'll be teaching her although I suspect she will get told different when she starts her photography course later this year!

Kentmere is Ilfords budget line, ideal for students. I use ilford rapid fixer, it doesnt really matter what fixer you use as they are all nearly the same formulation.
I picked up a bottle of Fotospeed stop, 1L for about £10, it lasts for ages as you dilute it 1+19 so its worth getting, even if you only use it a few times. i've only got through about 200mls in a year. I would guess that she will be taught to use stop bath

I've received a reply to my contact with AG.

Very helpfull......turns out I can purchase and pay for whatever I wish through their site and have it sent to my stepdaughters address in the UK

Grab her some gloves to go with it if I were you. I know us old hacks don't care too much about our ands etc but rodinal isn't the nicest and can cause cracks and sores on your hands, especially when undiluted.

Thanks for the advice Jim.

I am cautious myself when it comes to chems ...always wear apron, gloves and eye protection.

I learnt from experience the potential health issues having ruined a pair of leather shoes with spilt chems and also had a very poorly, overly curious pussy cat.....

Be assured I will ensure I pass my experiences on and insist care is taken.

What area of Wakefield does she live in and does she have a camera ?

I've got a zenit sorted out for her John.....will be a good learning tool me thinks!

She's based in Denby Dale ....just outside of Wakefield ( of course you will know that!! lol)

I see, shame she can't shoot something here, to process over there.

Denby Dale is close, always a nice drive out round there, I trip out to Emley quite often, that and a small scale steam railway at DDale, if it wasn't so far from work I'd live out that way..:)

Yes that would have been quite cool but film is something completely new to her.....the only photography she's ever involved herself with before has been snapshots of herself and friends with her mobile phone and of course when she has been the subject for my portrait photography.

After this visit she will return home armed with an slr, dev kit and a basic understanding of how to go on along with (hopefully) an interest in signing herself up on here and learning more from other TP members.
