Hi all

Just got a packet of Rodinal R09 (the new stuff) from firstcall photographic so I know it's all in date etc.

anyways I diluted up five litres at 1-100 and dev'd a couple of FP4+ sheets for testing, worked a treat.
This was a few days ago, It has now gone a dark brown colour. I just developed a roll of acros 100 35mm in it, and all seems fine (it's drying atm) but my question is twofold
a) is this normal, to go brown?
b) how long will it last?

Thanks
Nick

Doesn't sound normal. Is the whole strip fading to brown or is it retaining the detail in the negs but just getting a different hue? Could be a problem with your fix.

Most modern films have good enough archival properties that you usually wouldn't have to worry about it in your lifetime. Cheery thought.

If it's the Rodinal that's gone brown, then it's kind of normal and nothing to worry about - I've been using the same bottle for over a year and it's still fine, it's gradually got darker.
However, why have you mixed up a few litres? Unless you use the diluted Rodinal quickly, it'll go off. While it's concentrated, it'll keep for years, just mix up as much as you need at a time. I don't know what the shelf-life is of diluted Rodinal, but I get the impression it'll be days rather than weeks.

When mixed rodinal only has a shelf life of a couple of days, it is supposed to be done in batched as and when needed

oops. It's the rodinal that's gone brown! Right, beginner mistake then, It looks like I'll be dumping the brown stuff down the sink! Thanks everyone!

At least it was only 1+100 dilution, so only 50ml is used up :)

50ml? You mixed up 5l for one film?

I do it in 300ml batches, since that's the capacity of the tank...

He mixed it to store for the future. Or perhaps he was going ultra large format :D

Yeah 300 (SPARTA!) is the way to go, I've only devved 30 rolls but im catching on. I found 10ml syringes extremely helpful when measuring ro9. Did get a funny look of the nice lady in the chemists when i asked for one though lol

I was wondering what I could use to measure it with, thanks for the tip :)
