My wife and I are off for a weeks camping in Robin Hoods Bay next week. Apart from the obvious delights of the coast itself, and Whitby (We're going to walk to Whitby from RHB along the Cleveland Way), can anybody recommend any other places round and about? One other place we're doing is Eden Camp.

North Yorks Railway is good.
Beamish museum is a bit of a drive, but a good day out.

You reminded me, we actually drive through Pickering on our way to RHB, may do it on our way home.

Scarborough - head to the south end of town for the cliff gardens, pavillion etc
Goathland - (home of Heartbeat and Hogwarts station) is really picturesque and there's usually a few steam trains kicking about
Ravenscar - great walks, disused alum works etc

Falling Fosse waterfall and the surrounding streams May Beck and Little Beck off the main road to Ruswarp road and both signposted too about half a mile in.The old St Stephens Church has a remarkable interior and well worth a visit, this church sits above RHB and if its locked theres a keyholder nearbye (pm me if you need the address). If you want to venture inland and you are going to Eden Camp, Castle Howards well worth a visit, or maybe worth calling in on your way home? Sandsend, Runswick Bay,Port Mulgrave all worth a visit.
 
Black Nab, Saltwick Bay - just south of Whitby

Iconic landscape place, especially if you walk to Black Nab and shoot around the (small) boat wreck - low tide only though

Google it - but I have a decent shot or two from there I could post if needed

Selection of cistercian abbeys in the dales? None of which would be too far.

Helmsley?

Beamish would be a long drive.

seconded...
going again with togger friends this july.

last time the highlights were the abbey on the hill at whitby, the moored ship, black nag down the road at which we got up close with an infant seal. but we tried not to scare her.

loads of pics from friends of the boat wreck and the bay....lovely place to visit
 
Robin Hoods Bay is lovely. There are some great places for photo's and walking along the cliffs you will find some great views.

(Also go to the Fish and Chip shop, best Fish ever there)
 
If you go up on to the West Cliff in Whitby (on foot) follow the road around. There is a small tunnel that leads to some steps that go back down to behind the amusements.

From inside the tunnel it looks directly across to the Abbey.
If you can light up the inside of the tunnel (nice brickwork) and get a good shot of the Abbey it looks really good.


The small market area on the old side is worth a look.
Some nice alley ways that look across harbour.

NYM Railway, Staithes, Whitby beach huts, The Pier, maybeck and falling foss,

Also there is a small gallery on Flowergate, you should be able to get some good ideas for copycat photos.
 
Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton le Hole on the southern edge of the Moors has what they claim to be the oldest entirely daylight-lit photographic studio in the UK, dating from around 1902. This particular building was used as a studio in Pickering for several decades but was saved and moved to the museum a while ago. Very interesting with displays about Victorian portrait photography. I seem to recall that it's glazed with old glass plates.

ETA: if you're into industrial archaeology there are quite a few remains of the old iron mining industry in and around Rosedale.

Some more thoughts:

Do eat at least once at the Magpie Cafe, which is behind the fish wharf.

Do try some Fortune's Kippers (Henrietta Street) and consider taking some home for the freezer. You can't buy them anywhere else and they're not allowed to send them by post as they are far too authentic for the EU and would have been banned had the company not been in the family for over a century.

The Magpie serve them, as do a lot of local B&Bs and Botham's tea rooms (like Betty's) (http://www.botham.co.uk/). If you're self-catering, a slap-up breakfast at Botham's is highly recommended and so is a proper afternoon tea. You can't go wrong.

And do take a trip on the steam bus. Incredibly noisy but great fun.
 
If you're so inclined, try The Victorian Image on Sandgate which mimics a Victorian photo studio and takes Victorian studio portraits of you. They provide all the clothing for dressing up too. (Sorry, no website)

Also down towards Goathland there are several walks around half a dozen or so small waterfalls - very picturesque. You can find them easily enough on the OS map.
 
Thanks everybody for your kind suggestions. We had a lovely week, but the weather was a bit TOO good, if that makes sense, it was a bit too hot to do some of the more physical things we wanted to, but I did do the walk along the Cleveland Way to Whitby

If you don't mind the drive over to Middleham then The Forbidden Corner is absolutely amazing. I'm itching to get back there with a decent camera, there's all sorts of bizarre photo opportunities there, especially if you manage to get there while it's quiet :thumbs:
