This is probably the most stupid thread however here we go. Lately I have regularly been driving from my home to Scotland a distance of about 430 miles starting at junction 13 M1. I go up the M1, M6, M74 and eventually onto the A9. I always drive overnight.

Last night I again drove my normal route. I drove through a total of 15 sets of roadworks incl. the M6 being closed at 2 separate locations. The total of 15 does not include the further sets of roadworks I drove through after getting diverted off the Mway. I reckon that at least 50 miles of the journey comprised roadworks.

Is there a season for roadworks?
 
A lot of the road works in Yorkshire (M1 & M62) seem to be caused by the replacement of central steel barriers with concrete. I assume this is to try and prevent HGVs going through the barriers and may be related to proposals to increase HGV weight? So from a safety point of view it is probably a good idea, just annoying while it lasts. I assume the same work is being undertaken on the rest of the network.
 
The original plan was that all central barriers were to be replaced with concrete ones, as they are a lot safer. But that proposal has been watered down.
 
I have a theory - they have so many road cones that the only place big enough to store them is on the roads. :D
 
I thought some of the work on the M1 was due to these smart motorway upgrades which apparently means using the hard shoulder when its busy.
 
There are no roadworks to be fixed - that costs money & requires people to work..... These are just traffic calming measures....:exit:
