In July, me and the wife are going on a road trip from London to Cornwall. I was wondering if anyone has been to lizard before and their thoughts?

It looks amazing, just hoping fot good weather since we are going on the bike!

I don't think I can afford the space for my DSLR so it's going to have to be LX7 I'm afraid but should come back with some stunners.

Those that don't know about the area - google it, worth looking at just for the images alone!

Make a visit to kynance cove, fantastic place to visit

Went there last year, not much to do but amazing views and there is a cracking cornish pasty shop (more like someones house) down the road from the main car park in the village (past a village hall??) Amazing!

The Cornish coast is stunning. Down there for a week in June & can't wait. Havn't spent much time in the lizard peninsula area but the scenery is great whatever part of the coast your on!

I haven't done any photography down the lizard yet, but will do in October when I'm down. My favourite stamping ground (there is a pun there for industrial history buffs like me!) is Penwith - from St Just to St Ives.

Love the Lizard. Sunrise somewhere like Coverack and then follow the sun around the coast all day to finish with sun set at St Michael's Mount is always going to produce some stunning photographs somewhere along the line :) I don't think there is one un-interesting cove or bit of coastal road/path. The hardest part of the day is trying to avoid an overload of pasties and ice cream!

The hardest bit about 'biking in Cornwall in season is avoiding the f###wits who are looking at the scenery rather than where they're going! Then again, that's the only real downside to 'biking wherever you might be.

The Lizard peninsula is superb - Follow the single track lane to the NT car park and then enjoy the stunning coast. There is a little café at the end, it looks a little ramshackle but that is part of its charm. The food is lovely and if you are there in the evening it is a superb place to enjoy dinner on their patio, enjoying the sunset. Take your own wine or beer if you want a drink -they don't have a licence to sell alcohol. Here's a snap of the café and the other buildings at the end of the peninsula.

The coastal walks from the Lizard are amazing, the path to Kynance Cove is lovely, in the other direction there's a great walk to Church cove.

A tour of the Lizard lighthouse it interesting too.

Have a great trip - it's a lovely part of the Country.

Thanks for taking the reply, that's excellent and I will definitely check out this little place you recommend :)

What's church cove like for snorkelling??? (Or anywhere else in the lizard for that matter).

Cold!!!

Mrs Nod tells me that there have been some dirty great big sharks off the Cornish coast recently - Basking sharks though. Also some big jellyfish. Plenty of time for them to pass on before your visit though.

I'm not sure what you need for a good snorkelling location, but Church Cove has a small beach that is used by fishing boats, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to share a small cove with some reasonable sized fishing boats. Kynance Cove has a lovely mixture of beaches and rocks, but it's a bit of a walk from the car park, no problem if your gear is not heavy, but it's uphill on the return journey!

Coverack, a few miles along the coast has a harbour and a beach with easy access, perhaps that might better - but I know nothing about snorkelling, I'd rather be looking down onto the sea! Coverack looks something like this........

Here's a recent video shot while snorkelling off Sennen Cove...

Give me a week and I'll be in the water as often as possible... :D

you wanna see your quack about that breathing ,don't sound right to me especially at that age ,and yes i have snorkelled and dived and listened to myself on video while under exertion

I love Devon and Cornwall. This thread is making me want to go rent a cottage.

I used to work in the Lizard team - i'd highly recomend the whole coast for photography from the helford estuary (and the seal sanctuary in Gweek), round past carne creek, to areas like coverack, then poltesco, ruan minor, cadgwith, the lizard, kynance, predanack wollas, mullion harbour and up to the penrose estate arround looe bar. For the aviation nut theres also RNAF culdrose (mainly heliflopters)

If you complete all that lot its worth checking out the beaches round mounts bay to penzance Praa sands etc , St Michaels mount , Pensanze itself , the whole of the west penwith area (St Just etc) , and Godrevy oposite St ives

It will be triffic

That said I'd really aim to squeeze the DSLR and at least a 17-50 in (you can get tank bag adaptors for a lowe pro rucksack btw) - as you'll be kicking yourself if you don't

I may well just try and take the suggested combo Pete. On the other hand, I like the fact that if I only have the LX7 it forces me to be a bit more creative I guess...

Tank bag is out of the question as it's a long ol' journey and that's where I rest my left elbow in a cruising position

The wife will surely be getting upset if I spend too much time with the camera but I'll try and do as much as possible!

you should go for it .. there's lots of fun things possible in the west country

I liked the Gweek seal sanctuary even though it peed it down.

Besides, the very name makes me giggle :-)
