Whittie and J4M13 were suspended for circumventing the rules.

Whittie has been a member here for some time, and is thus permitted to start for-sale threads, J4M13 did not have that privelege.
So it seems Whittie advertised the goods for him instead, using his own account.

The first two posts, the IP addresses are different, which backs up this statement.

You see ladies and gentlemen, THIS is why we have these rules in the first place. THIS is why we have the classifieds guidelines that always seem to get overlooked too.

We've sent an email to Whittie asking him to respond. He hasn't been on the forums since his suspension (as fabs has stated).

As for those digging around the internet for J3M13's details, that's fine (and very community minded :)), but please keep personal details off the forum. We don't want to land in DPA hot water...ta :)

Perhaps it's time to close the loophole that allows zero posters access to the classifieds and maybe have it so you need, say 50 posts/30 days to view the sales fora?

And how would that stop the above situation? It was only because J4M13 was stupid enough to post a reply, that we knew about it.

Either I am missing the point but if (for example) you needed 50 posts to view the classifieds, how could he respond having no posts?????????

I do feel sorry for the purchaser, and it does appear to be somewhat naive and far too trusting, but as mentioned before.... alarms and bells!

How would that stop him asking his friend to sell it for him though? All it would have done was actually make it worse in that no-one would have likely been aware it was being sold by a third party

I think it would just stop a potential scam where somebody could Join here, Post exactly what was posted in the second post of that thread and receive payment before the original poster ever reads the new updates on the thread. This could be made even more problematic of the OP is banned.

Personally I think the Classifieds causes a lot of problems on this site and I don’t think they are limited to the classifieds section

Stuart

just noticed that it is....sorry for your problems!!! Hope you get it sorted shortly

there is a postcode and phone number for Whittie available from a car for sale if it is any good to you

there is even a MAP!:bat:

and he only posted the items 23 minutes ago!!!!! SCAM MERCHANT!!! ME THINKS!!!!

I might be wrong, but that's a cached page and it's referring to "23 minutes ago" from 23 Feb 2011 21:17:55 GMT. I'm not saying he's not a scam merchant, but he hasn't just tried to sell the stuff again today, on that linked page at least.

Yes - it's a cached page. The ad was placed there on the same day as it was on TP.

i just called from a withheld number and he answered, asked him about the camera for sale and he said it was sold, may be worth giving him a ring if we know he is answering??

:hug2: Awwww Shell. Sorry to hear about this.
Good to see you back on the forum again, but a real shame it wasn't in better circumstances. How are you?

Don't write off the cash just yet.
As others have said it's been less than a week since you sent payment, and it looks like the items were marked as sold on the other forum at the same time that you paid. Could well be that the seller found he was suspended and hasn't bothered logging back on to check if his access is reinstated.

You've got some good leads from the others to let you contact him so fingers crossed that it turns out to have a happy ending.

OOPS!!! My Mistake.....SORRY!:bonk:

Did you not get any other details from him at all? Landline telephone number, address etc?

Like Marcel says, this is exactly why we have the guidelines in place, getting ALL personal details BEFORE sending any money or items to anyone. Shell, I suspect this is going to sort out very quickly and is simply miscommunication but please, to all of you, get those details before you commit any money!!

I'd agree with this, at least you'll stop a random chancer

I'd also urge TP members to only use PayPal verified users.

Mick

don't tar us all with the same brush, one of my first posts here was a purchase from the classified! ;)

fair comment Mick, btw sorry for the hi-jack but how do i get an itrader rating??

as you buy and sell items the seller/purchaser updates your profile

as you do to people from whom you buy/sell

I made two purchases on here without a hitch.

Looking at the sale thread it looked dodgy. Sorry to say it was a lightweight mistake. I hope it gets sorted.

Paypal are very very good for sorting this sort of thing out. Give them a call. I was stung on software from America and got my money back within the week.

Bank transfers are even more dodgy. I would never do that. Try getting money back from that sort of money transfer. Unless you want to go to the small claims. My advice would that the buyer pays the paypal fee. They are then well covered by paypal. It may be £15 but it's well worth the peace of mind.

What are the rules for being able to sell on here? I thought it was 30+ posts and being a member for over a month.

Anyhow I think the mods were wrong for suspending the members. For a start it didn't help Michelle. It cut one form of communication between her and the seller which cant of helped the situation. Ban member for insults etc but not when a transaction has been instigated.

I would agree Simon,

I sold a mobile on eBay, against evey bone in my body "screaming" NO I posted it recorded oversees :bang:

Never arrived :suspect: but what can you do, I was in dispute with the PO over the delivery but PayPal took the money back form me

I was then left with 2 unpaid strikes for stupid little items of under £5 because I could not get money into my PayPal account quick enough.

OP, it's defo worth raising the problem with PayPal, as the saying goes "if you don't ask"

Good luck,

Mick

Details had been exchanged, payment had been made. All necessary forms of communication were available to both parties. A serious transgression of the rules had taken place, the suspensions were correct.

So i take it you can still pm if you have been suspended?

Paypal are very very good for sorting this sort of thing out.

Paid for from the fees collected from legitimate users of PayPal, of course. The ones that don't use gift payments for goods and services

Not at all. It was certainly worthy of a suspension. We only allow PM's to provide payment details, that's it. The thread is to be used for ALL dealing. That's why it's not to be archived until the sale is complete and both parties are happy.

If both parties in this instance had stuck to the rules and also followed the classifieds guidelines, there would be more than one solid method of communication available outside of TP. Landline phone number, address etc.

As for requiring 30 posts, again incorrect. It's 100 posts before you can sell something. This has been so for a *long* time.
We provide easy access to the rules, we insist people read them before they sign up, we point them out multiple times per day. Why is it that people *still* don't know them? What more can we do?

I for one would be happy to completely see the classifieds close completely. It's nothing but a pain.

A pain that only ever comes from the rules not being followed.

alas that is something im reading more and more across various forums from the management.. tis a shame that the actions of some ruin it for everyone.

It would be a shame to see the classifieds go IMHO I've used them several times without a hitch, the last time I even received the item and came online to thank the seller only to find that I'd messed up on the payment and hadn't actually paid for it (embarrassed wasn't even close to how I felt)

Having said that there are rules and guide lines to be followed for everyone’s safety, it’s just a shame that people only seem to read them once they’ve been burnt.
