RIP Percy Ingle

I lived around Stratford for a couple of years some time ago, and one of the things I liked was the Tottenham cake. Very simple - but well done. I won't be getting a slice of that again then.

Nope gone for good along with the little crusty rolls with a star shape on top

Shame. Sign of the times. I'm assuming that colossal rents have had something to do with their decision to close; far too many 'independent' businesses are going under simply because they cannot afford to keep paying greedy landlords so much money. But hey; that's Capitalism, folks.

As for Greggs (I assume that it's they to whom you refer); on the very few occasions I have stupidly bought something from there, I've always wondered just how you can make food so badly. That must take some real effort. Surely it would be actually easier (and possibly cheaper!) to make food that's actually edible? Ditto McDonalds, and most other large corporate chains. What is it about the British pallette, that such utter crap is so popular? [Insert political rant here]

Pingles was never great, but the products weren't bad, some things were very nice tbh. The branches did at least have a 'local' feel to them, and were popular. Mmm... cream doughnut....

I can't bring myself to go and see what the old indoor market has become, since the building of that horrid Temple of Mamon that is Westfield. Went there since I was a little kid, for years. I think I even enjoyed that rite of passage, shoplifting, for the first time there (ended up in West Ham nick  ). I fear if I were to visit now, it would simply be too depressing. :(:crying:

It is indeed Greggs to whom I refer, the local one to me only sells a few loaves of bread, all the rest is nasty pasty things and soggy sausage rolls.
Before them it was Bakers Oven, part of their chain, but actually sold uncut loaves and rolls that were half decent.
Is the Jewish bakers still in Stamford Hill, at one time only place you could buy bread on a Sunday, Grodzinski I think it was called

I believe it was cleared out in time for the Olympics, we used to go there for the Co-Op department store and the stalls in Angel Lane.

f*****g Olympics. Ruined that area. 'Legacy' my arse. Watch it all become a horrible sprawling mess of commercial development, as the time restraints on keeping all that open space 'natural', run out. Canary Wharf 2. That's what we paid 9 billion quid for...

Yes! It's literally round the corner from me! Excellent bread, really nice friendly staff, mainly Polish and Romanian. Rugellach to die for (literally; so much sugar they will kill you). And proper beigels (yes; BEIGELS, not 'bagels'). The original Grodzinsky's shop was on the Whitechapel Road, opposite the London Hospital. I think it's a McD's now. For shame.

Apparently not; the original shop was in Fieldgate St. The second was in Dunsmure Road, N16 (my local branch). The Whitechapel road shop must have come later. I remember it being open as a kid though. We had a Jewish bakery near us, on Roman Road E3, when I was little. They were all over. Dissapeared when the owners either sold up and move outwards, or went under cos of the rise in supermarkets. But you've still got Rinkoffs on Vallance road, but I'm not really sure how 'Jewish' that is these days. I don't think it's properly Kosher, anyway. But Grodzinski's is now 132 years old. Which is pretty remarkable.

Pretty sure they had a branch in Leather Lane, Holborn, seems possible with its proximity to Hatton Garden

Used to be a super shop for beigels just around the corner from cazenove road .. and there used to be a coffee bar called the fountains by the bus stop , dunsmure road is where if my memory serves me rightly was were Eric hall the promoter hailed from and Marc feld a.k.a Marc bolan Was also from round there somewhere ,there was a newsagents along there to went out with his daughter for a bit , .. brings back memories the bowling alley at Stamford hill was the first in the u.k to , remember the day two Army lorry loads of the krays boys turned it over due to a upset .. all long hidden memories from 60 years ago.
And the salt beef bar on Stamford hill still makes my mouth drool these days , hot salt beef ,gherkins and mustard WOW
