RIP my 30d

I switched from F4's to EOS 1's back in my press hayday with Reuters, along with the rest of the world's snappers, and switched back to F4's inside 6 months.

I got caught in the IRA explosion in Downing Street in the early 90's and both my EOS 1's shattered, but my FM2 survived entirely unscathed. Nearly every Pap or Press Snapper I ever met carries an FM2 or an F3 as a back up, regardless of what system they use for their main cameras.

Very interesting - Would love to hear a little more, if you are happy to share?

Just caught up with this thread. So sorry to hear about your 30D Neil - I do hope the insurance pays up for you. Looking on the bright side you might get enough for a shiny new 40D ;)

It's not nearly as interesting as it sounds...

There was a bomb in briefcase in Whitehall back in November '92. I was freelance at the time but doing most of my work for London News Service (AKA Sport & General or Barretts Photo Press).

I got a phone call from another snapper called Dave Cheskin who had camped out at Parliament Square end of Whitehall. I swiftly made my way to the Trafalgar Square end.

There was a Police cordon in place and a line of coppers linking arms and saying nothing. At some point (I can't honestly remember how long I'd been there) the crowd surged forward as so many people joined to see what was happening.

the resulting pressure caused the Police to break apart and at 19 years old I wasn't going to wait for an invite, so with three cameras slung over my shoulders and neck I pegged it through the gap and started running toward the incident.

As i got past the theatre on the right I could just see some movement near Downing Street, bomb squad and Police. Another 50 yards on and something didn't seem right (apart from the cries of several Police Officers trying to catch me).

One of the (I assumed) bomb squad guys was moving very quickly away from the area. I got about another 50 yards down the road and the hole thing went "bang".

The next thing I remember is waking up in St Thomas's with a headache and tinittus.

@chewyuk: I am sorry to hear about your camera, but I feel I must add my voice to those people who have not had problems with weather.... from the EOS side.

Back when I had a 20D, I put it through alot, including shooting soccer in the pouring rain for hours, droping in a knee deep puddle (for 20 seconds, which required a day or two of drying to get working again), and all kinds of snow and ice, without problems. It was really tough.

A friend has a D60 which he had drenched in wave many times. but is still going strong (but required a shutter replacement).

@danny james: That is a crazy cool story, though I am not too sure I would say the same if it happend to me.

I'll add a bit to the "pro EOS" argument too - both my D30 and 30D bodies have taken absolute soakings from time to time and have emerged unscathed. I always dry off any water before putting them back in the bag, and if they've been out in the wet I make sure they get given a good airing once back home.

Well would you believe it, guess what started working again today !!

OK, so not completely, but I can use it... The auto flash doesn't work, the single battery holder doesn't either, but it does with the grip !!

Shots write to the card...So it's looks a little more positive.

Just in time for a Christmas trip to West Wales ! I've not taken a shot in 3 weeks !

Good news :)

Guess the single battery could be corroded contacts that might clean up?

Not sure yet Robert, but it is definately to do with the single battery holder, batteries are all fine. I am guessing the contacts will impact the way the flash pops up?
Currently the menu presents me with a jamming error message.
Worried a little about the flash, but don't use it at all really (I have my 580 for that), so don't know why I am that worried.
