RIP John Surtees

Still the only man to have one the World Championship on both 2 and 4 wheels.

Met him a couple of years ago, a hero that lived up to it in person :)

He even posed for photo for a fan boy :)

Bit before my time, but if I remember rightly he did ride for one of my favourites, MV Agusta, still remember the unique sound of them
when I followed motor cycle racing in the 70/80s
Really must get back into it now I have the time

You should have taken the photo from his left and got his namesake in the background. ;)

I met him in the paddocks of FOS!!! Lovely genuine English gent

On the anniversary of losing Barry Sheene too.

Champion when 2 wheels involved the Isle of Man TT and 4 wheels the Nurbergring. I don't think his achievements quite got the recognition they deserved, certainly outside the motorsports community.

I very much doubt that will ever be achieved again. RIP.

Perhaps now we'll find out why he was never knighted despite many petitions and much comments from motorsport professionals over the years. I met him in the early 1960's when he had a motorcycle shop in West Wickham and well remember him drifting a classic Merc round Clearways during his 50th birthday celebrations at Brands Hatch. If only F1 looked like that today.

The greatest ever Motorsport competitor?
He had 38 wins and 45 podiums in 51 starts in Motorcycle GP racing, and then went on to have 6 wins and 24 podiums in F1 - astonishing!
If he had been a footballer or golfer, then he would have been knighted.
