This man, this legend, this awesome scientist and teacher died 15 years ago today. Without fail, every year I read Cosmos, every year I watch Cosmos. No one managed to bring science to the masses like he did. A great inspiration to many, many people.

Cosmos is simply the best DVD series I have seen and thankfully own.

Ok it looks a bit dated, but that is superficial. The content is sublime and his presentation of the program is as good as Sir David Attenborough's is in his domain.

Indeed. Did you know a sequel is in the works?

Thanks for the Cosmos link, I've ordered it for myself as a Christmas pressie. Carl Sagan certainly inspired me.

Can still see him in my minds eye saying with his silky voice "the total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth."
One of the greats!

It's such a shame he's not around today as science programmes (especially on cosmology) are much more mainstream.

I am sure he inspired the likes of Brian Cox in being amongst the first to explain physics etc to people who don't have phd's in quantum mechanics and pure mathematics.

I watch Cosmos every year, and read the book too. As an avid listener to science, skeptical and astronomy podcasts it's amazing how often his name is mentioned. He truly was an innovator and inspiration.

Just watched Cosmos again. As inspiring as ever.

More information about the reboot, due in 2014, can be found here.

I had to have a chuckle - He was quoting a bit of scripture there then - or using its poetry for his own end...

Hebrews 11 v12 New International translation

And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

A scientist unafraid to say things like:-

"Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual.

Sadly He like many others would not be accepted by many in his field of expertise today. Imho most of the "People" Scientists have been subdued by the cancer that masquerades as Atheism. But is in fact more divisive than that.

Today is the anniversary of the death of the greatest science educator of all time.

R. I. P. Carl.

He might've been, but he was also telling the truth. There are more stars visible to our telescopes than there are grains of sand on the planet.

O yes I like that word Truth! something you can stand on!

Funny how all those planets, stars and dust obey a set of rules that WE / US have nothing to add too! what so ever, no opinion, no theory, no amount of collective effort can change them. In a nutshell we are helpless and must obey the same rules the universe obeys.

Nope not seeing the link other than using sand as an example of the extremely large number.

I would really hate to see this thread about respect for a decent person have to be moved to hot topics.

I really hope not. I honestly believe that if everyone read and saw his work the world would be a better place.

Long, long time since I saw the series on TV. Actually had forgotten how impressive it was. Just ordered his book "Cosmos" from Amazon.

I tried watching the NDGT 'reboot' last year but I wasn't in the right frame of mind. I had a quick flick through the original Carl Sagan videos, can't remember where and couldn't settle into it.
I've just purchased the book on Amazon....just in time for it coming tomorrow :)
Now, do I keep it or do I give it to my son for christmas, then borrow it? :D

I use to watch him ,he made it easy to not only understand the problems we make but also how they could be fixed -20 years on we have just made it worse .
Rob.

I’ve just started my annual re-watch of Cosmos - A Personal Voyage.

Such an amazing series.
