That is too bad. One of the old good memories from TV long gone.

Sad news ... brings back memories of early TV :)

Memories here too

RIP Bert!

Just remembered that Brian Blessed was in Z Cars too!

All of my childhood TV stars are heading that way .

That little square B/W box in the corner on a dark winter night, brings back memories

10 min documentary on Z cars for those that don't remember it

RIP Bert

Aha! So from childhood you always wanted to play cops and robbers :p

For me it was the "need" to own a Ford Zephyr or Zodiac but not a Consul. I got a Zephyr when old enough.

Then later 'The Sweeney' came along so it was a Mk2 Jag or Mk 1 Granada. I had the latter for a very short while.

It was the cars!! Heartbeat had me hankering for a Ford Anglia but I went through that period with watching George Polley, in the Spedeworth days, race his Anglia Hot Rod in the small oval .....

Def the cars.

I liked George Polley too, who raced that "old fashioned" Anglebox [was it painted purple?] against Barry Lee's flashy Burton Escorts!

Back when the police were universally respected, when I was a baby, my father had a huge, 100mph pre-war Alvis Speed 25 saloon that had been the high speed police training vehicle at Hendon Police College. His great friend, who was the Met’s Civilian Traffic Officer told him when it was coming up for sale, and which one of the two Alvis to buy – you’d be amazed how many police officers had lost control of their police cars when they “swerved to avoid a dog that suddenly ran into the road!” as opposed to how few ever crashed immediately after saying “look how fast I can go round this corner!” Anyway, everywhere he went, coppers would salute, wave, smile or say "Oh, I see you've got FLO ... [the reg no!] !

Then again in the fifties and sixties, loads of coppers would show up in his garage's workshops just when the kettle was boiling! It did mean that, on least one occasion, when my dad ran out of petrol, he was brought a gallon in a can by a policeman on a Noddy bike! (y)

As for James Ellis, no one has yet said, in Private Eye style: "So farewell then, Bert Lynch! Na na na, ni na na na nah, na na na, ni na na na! That was your tune!"

Polley's Anglia changed through the dark reds into mauve and near pink on one occasion when we out near Ipswich for a meet.

Barry Lee turned up with his mk2 bodyshelled mk 1 Escort painted Gold. He may have won a championship. My crew were Polley fans so we followed his 306 car number with tee shirts and some painted their bikes in Anglia 306 colours.

Great days Z Cars on TV, Hot Rods and Bangers (loads of Austin Cambridges and Morris Oxfords ended their days "Banger Racing"

Nostalgia time..... One day I will reminisce about my Triumph Vittesse...
