I liked George Polley too, who raced that "old fashioned" Anglebox [was it painted purple?] against Barry Lee's flashy Burton Escorts!
Back when the police were universally respected, when I was a baby, my father had a huge, 100mph pre-war Alvis Speed 25 saloon that had been the high speed police training vehicle at Hendon Police College. His great friend, who was the Met’s Civilian Traffic Officer told him when it was coming up for sale, and which one of the two Alvis to buy – you’d be amazed how many police officers had lost control of their police cars when they “swerved to avoid a dog that suddenly ran into the road!” as opposed to how few ever crashed immediately after saying “look how fast I can go round this corner!” Anyway, everywhere he went, coppers would salute, wave, smile or say "Oh, I see you've got FLO ... [the reg no!] !
Then again in the fifties and sixties, loads of coppers would show up in his garage's workshops just when the kettle was boiling! It did mean that, on least one occasion, when my dad ran out of petrol, he was brought a gallon in a can by a policeman on a Noddy bike!
As for James Ellis, no one has yet said, in Private Eye style: "So farewell then, Bert Lynch! Na na na, ni na na na nah, na na na, ni na na na! That was your tune!"
