Just curious how other people stop the unwanted reflections from shiny surfaces such as metal and windows.

Im mainly asking about photoshoots involving a model posing with a car.. off axis lighting you can play around with the angle to avoid these.. but i cant think of a solution with ringflash without destroying the composition.

You have to compromise. Light bounces (reflects) off a surface at the same angle it strikes, like a snooker ball off the cushion.

So if the flash is square to the surface, the light will bounce straight back. Shoot at an angle, and it will bounce off to one side. Difficult with a car though, lots of surfaces at different angles.

if you want to light the car and the model on the same plane, then ring flash is probably the wrong tool for the job. If you can light them on different plance, then make use of perspective, and use the model as a gobo, maybe?

I think the last 2 answers are the right ones.
The ringflash may be the right tool for the model but it's definately the wrong tool for the car.

If the primary subject is the model then the result (on the car) may or may not be acceptable if you choose your angles and distance carefully.
If the primary subject is the car then you need to use different tools.
