Ring Flash

For that type of money I would say the RayFlash or a similar equivalent would be the way to go, however like HoppyUK says - you will need a decent hot-shoe flash to get the most out of it :)

I do remember looking into the same question a while back, but for what I wanted It was going to cost over £500+ for a decent mains powered unit - so I decided to give it a miss lol

Agreed, this is not suitable for portrait photography. See the sellers' description
The Marumi Ring Flash id the perfect choice for the photographer who requires shadow free illumination. It is designed for close up, macro, medical, scientific and forensic photography.
There are 2 main reasons why it isn't suitable.
1. The power output is far too low for it to be used at a distance
2. It's far too small physically to create the 'ringflash effect' - ringflashes for people photography need to be about 6" diameter

The various add-on ringflashes have their limitations in terms of build quality and power but at least they're big enough to do the job

the rayflash would work with a medium power flashgun, you dont have to have top of the range .
Rob.

The Marumi does not have replacement bulbs.
I have a ringflash that I've used twice. Brilliant results but not made the effort to use it more often.
