Ben,

I haven't any experience of this unit but have been doing a little research.

Firstly, it's not a flash. It's simply a light source to assist with exposure and focussing when there's not enough light....very similar to a ring light that would be used with a microscope.

I've got something very similar, a little more powerful and far cheaper. I suspect that the price is hiked up because this one is aimed at photographers rather than general use.

The item I refer to is shown in this shot

It is Chinese origin (what isn't) and costs around £35.

does if fit on the front of the lens?

Yes, but it's not ideal. It is a similar system to the one I have and look at the shot in my post and you'll see a couple of thumb screws (there are three). Simply tighten these onto the lens barrel to fix it.....they'll leave marks after a while and won't work well with an extending front element type setup. This is why they can cover all the various diameters in one fell swoop.

Taking Bobs commects on board, my suggestion would be to buy a step up ring from 67 -72 or 77 and a lens hood, mount the ringflash onto the lens hood and you won't mark your lens!

Bob,

Could you please provide a link, to where you've bought this. Also, what type of power source does this use (battery or mains)?

Thank you :)

Thanks Bob . That's a wonderful link, great stuff they have there.
