Hi all,

Just a quick question to ask if anyone has any experience with the ARB800 Alienbees Ring Flash?

http://www.alienbees.com/abr800.html (can be seen here)

I do mostly portrait work and I though something like this would be a great addition to my kit...

I was tempted by the Lencarta studio kit - but its out of my budget really :'( do you think the ring flash would be a good investment, or should I save up for the Lencarta kit?

I have only heard good things about that ring-flash, I was even gonna buy one but the postage and import tax is lots.

Ah yea that never even occurred to me... :bonk: might work out pretty expensive in that case. I wonder if there are any similar alternatives

I had a look at them last time I was in NYC.
It isn't very ruggedly built and there's room for improvement to the design, but it performs well for the money and has a good range of accessories.

on the same subject & more aimed at Garry.

Why does the Lencarta ringflash require a battery pack is there no way of getting an inverter [i know u need to move around with it but in a studio power i plentiful] ??

Have had a mooch around for ring flashes but apart form the reynox there aren't any cheap ones, im guessing import tax and shipping will be alot, good time to buy though at around 1.6$ to the £.

The Lencarta ringflash is part of a system - you can plug Safari flash heads into the powerpack as well as the ringflash, it's a portable power solution not just a ringflash - and anyway, if it was mains powered it would have to be much heavier and larger because all of the 'works' would be in the head. The same would apply if it was used with an inverter - it would need to have all the 'works' in the head.

The power pack really isn't a problem. It's small and light enough to carry on the shoulder and anyway it can be put on the ground, the cable is 2.5 metres long and there's a 5m extension available for it too.

BTW, Amateur Photographer are about to publish a review on the Safari Ringflash Kit, comes out on Saturday I think

I'm sure I read somewhere about AB not being prepared to to ship to the UK, although this may have been during the (very) brief period that they had a European distributor...

It's out already

Having bought one of the lencarta Safari power packs and the ring flash, it is without a doubt the best value solution in the market as far as I a can see, used it straight out of the tin with very good consistant results, oh, and by the way wait 'till you use it out side on location, bloody brill.:clap:
