Yes.

The strip softbox will put the light exactly where you want it, and nowhere else. And the studio flash has enough power to do the job.

The speedlight has very little power to start with, adding a honeycomb cuts it down dramatically and then it has to be moved a long way away to provide enough coverage of the length - by which point it is providing far too much coverage of the width - and at the distance involved it has virtually no power. It also has no modelling lamp, making precise placement difficult to guess.

Is there any major difference between using a stripbox with grid or using a speedlite with grid for rim lighting?

Would this be (like me) Due to space issues wanting a strip box to fit in a tight corner?

If so watch this space :) my (rip of) light tube is at the painters and looking mighty fine at the moment it could be what you need :).
