I have been toying with the idea of taking up photography for a while, and rather then go in neck deep straight away I have decided to buy myself a cheap bridge camera to play with first to make sure im serious enough. I bought a GE HZ1500. I know a lot of you experienced and talented photographers will probably cringe at this camera however your thoughts and comments would be much welcomed.

I am also after some advice on things to start out with, for instance good subjects to try out my camera.

Thanks

Jenny

Hello Jenny

Flowers are a good starting point primarily as they don't move, they come in various shapes, sizes and colours and can be shot from various angles.

Shoot on Auto, read and learn about composition firstly then you can move into more manual / program settings, understanding exposure then onto how White Balance and Metering etc can effect the final image.

It will seem bewildering at first when you decide to move from Auto, but stick with and when you can decide what mode suits your shooting you won't look back

Thanks ANDY! I am off work tomorrow and the weather forecast to be nice so think I will go for a nice walk somewhere and take some shots of wild flowers!

Unfortunately you have made the beginners first mistake.

I am an am Astronomer, and with Christmas coming so many children who have asked for a telescope are given an Argos special, then when the find it so bad they give up, not knowing what they miss because parents who have no idea think Argos/jessops, comet or god forbid Ebay sellers know best.

MY advice would have been to "join a club" before buying ANYTHING".

Then perhaps a FILM camera for £30, say a Pentax or Nikon, I still use mine after 30 years.

However you have what you have, do not give up when the results may be, sorry, poor.

Join a club, join a club, join a club.

Whatever you take a photograph of never ever stand up pointing the camera at it head on, bend, crouch, lay, even jump, get below it, look directly down on it but be different, you will learn.
