So, searching t'interweb about this issue and I found this -

"Likely, the fixer will continue to be robust and it will continue to fix film/paper however, the colloidal sulfur is a super fine particle and it will infuse into the porous gelatin structure of the film/paper emulsion. Should this happen, washing away the unwanted percipient is extremely difficult"

I'll add any more I come across.

From the Ilford fact sheet -

"Full, unopened bottles of ILFORD RAPID FIXER concentrate stored in cool conditions, 5–20ºC (41–68ºF), will keep for two years."

I would estimate this bottle is a lot older than 2 years.

and http://www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/2006130218312091.pdf doesn't say what results do you get if using their fixer when it is well out of date....which is fair enough I suppose.

Please ignore my sad sense of humour.....it's a genetic problem that i am unable to control!

To try get back on track......hurry up and shoot another roll and dev in new chems....thé suspense to sée if we've figured where thé problerm lies is driving me nuts and causing my humour (or lack of it) to overload!

I don't suppose I'll get the new bottle of fix before the middle of next week. I'll shoot a roll this weekend to make sure I'm ready.

The thing I'm really happy about with all this is that it's not a problem with the FG.

Would soaking it in fresh fixer help dissolve and remove what every nasty stuff has been absorbed by the emulsion?

If I do try that it would probably best to throw that batch of fixer away.
