i really need some help! i'd really like to set up my own business, I am a 17 year old girl so obviously haven't got the money for big things just yet, I'd like to start off small, but I honestly haven't a clue how or where i would start!?

I like and do all types of photography, and I really enjoy doing it which obviously helps!

I've written on facebook to my friends asking if they want some free sessions just to start off, do you think this is a good idea?

Also what sort of places do you suggest for these kind of shoots?

Do you recommend I buy some studio type things for the photography?

Any advice would be really good, thank you!!

offering free session to friends is a good starting point, I reckon.

But not sure you are gonna get much help here. Seen these type of threads before. It always ends up with some coming on here accusing people of trying to get free advice or you'll end up with "why should I help someone who will eventually take business away from me" type of comments.

Good luck with it, though.

I read a veg gardening book once, which made the point that you shouldn't give stuff away if it's your living, especially in your first year when you are trialling things.

Sophie, ignore the grumpy old men.

You're young and keen to develop. Good for you. I would seize every opportunity you can to take pictures. Read as much as you can, learn everything you can - books, magazines, and there is tons of free knowledge and willing help on here.

If you fancy a move into professional photography, my personal suggestion would be to go to college for three years first, and get a good qualification to go with a fully rounded photographic learning experience :)

I agree. But then again - I'm not in it for the money.

Good luck - and get togging

Well, neither am I. Which means I am not a myopic grumpy old Don Quixote with Ludite tendencies, not wishing to turn the clock back, not anti technology, don't believe there should be a law against taking photos for free (punishable by death) and welcome fresh new talent :D

Any of that diatribe aimed at me? Sophie wants to set up a business. That means making a profit, if she wants to keep the biz (or sell it and retire...).

Not specifically Photon, no. You're making a different point I think.

However, she's 17 and is looking for some practise. Good for her. I'm not sure she'll get many paid commissions just yet. In business terms, call it a research and marketing cost.

I would suggest joining your local camera club.... you can make friends with like minded local people, some of whom may be professional.
You will make some good connections etc.

I don't think you will find many if any pro's at a camera club.

You are by far better off on photography forums such as this.

Good luck!

Someone on here, or possibly another forum suggested contacting local animal shelters and offering free sessions for animals needing new homes. Great way to hone your skills and maybe develop something from there.

I go to my local camera club and there are some professionals there. What harm can it do, a club for face to face connections and a forum for lots of people who love their own opinions. Win Win Win.

Hi Sophie. It's great that you are so keen. I think gaining a qualification in your chosen field is a good idea. Understanding all aspects of photography, in both the technical and creative side should be benficial and enjoyable. In the meantime anything you can do to help you gain in experience and develop your style is a good thing.
If your friends are willing models, then take the opportunity and experiment...have fun
