weekly Rico's 52. Weeks 7: Root (uninspired)

Hi Richard,

Good start to your 52, for direction I like your uncropped version alot, the light is just lovely. Fear, great idea, I imagine she is biting her nails behind that book, not so keen on the ghostly figure. Sigh, brilliant didn't see it at first...then the penny dropped!

All the best for the next challenge.

Carol
Thanks Carol. :)

Like it, could poss be a bit brighter but not sure if that would make it less "sighy".
Thanks, I did play with the brightness but didn't like the results much.

It would be more than a sigh if I had done that!!

Good interpretation!
Thanks! :)

I never noticed until I read the next post :bonk:

Good one
Thank you!

Like the fear interpretation with her sat reading the book. Shadows are really contrasty which adds to the mood.

haha at the 'sigh' shot.. unlucky!
Thanks. :)

That would have been a 4 letter word begining with "S" but it would'nt have been sigh....

Cheers

Steve
Haha aye I let out a few choice words as well. ;)

Direction : Love the colours and warmth, and the direction is clear, so bang on theme... Whilst understandable, the sign seems a little dark, and I wonder if a splash of fill light would help ??

Fear : I see what you were attempting, and the ghost image is intriguing, but I'm afraid neither of them quite work for me. Perhaps having a dark figure outside the window, pressed against the glass looking in would have worked better.

Sigh : We all have those moments... and also Sigh about it.. works for me.
Thank you.

Did the dream taste bad? If not I'd have eaten it anyway!!!

Great shot, and nice subtle take on the theme. I'm glad you didn't go the obvious route and include something with today's date on it to emphasise that the cream is out of date; I like subtle a lot!!!
Thanks a lot! It didn't taste too bad but I scraped most of it off.

Great idea, I completly agree this week really was a challenge!
Thanks. :)

Good set there mate but direction original does it great take on theme and very well shot
Thank you!

Excellent take on Sigh.
Thanks Bilko.

I'm away until Tuesday but I'm looking forward to seeing the new theme and will be checking first thing tomorrow. Hopefully it's something I can shoot while away in the fens.

I'll try and comment on as many threads as I can when I get back.

Cheers,

Richard.

Direction - Nicely done
Fear - I think I would have been tempted to put a scary face looking in through the window
Sigh - It took me a while to spot the date. Hope you enjoyed your pudding anyway.

Sigh - Good, different, take on the theme.

Oh, and the cream being out of date wouldn't have stopped me either. I like my pud too much!

I think everyone will agree when I say that it was a somewhat easier theme this week! :naughty:

Some folks have put up some really good ideas this week, I'll get around to commenting on you all later this week when I have a bit more free time. ;)

I remembered a post I had seen during the first weeks challenge and thought it was really good and made a mental note to ̶c̶o̶p̶y̶ try it myself when the opportunity arose!
After much searching, I found This post by *Sarah* and gathered the necessary materials.

I have much admiration for you Sarah! I was also pulling my hair out after 6 hours of it!

I finally ended up with this shot of Skittles.

Cropped version:

Things I have learned during this:

  • Clean the glass often! You might not be able to see any blemishes but I guarantee that the camera will!
  • It's very hard to manually focus on something so little. What looks sharp in the viewfinder and on the camera LCD looks very bad on a monitor! I ended up using the EOS control utility on my notebook.
  • When attempting something like this, use mirror lock up to avoid the shutter from causing blur.
  • Use some form of remote or self timer to avoid camera shake.

All in all, an enjoyable challenge and I have definitely learnt some new things!

For anyone interested, my (high-tech) setup shot:

  • 2x tins of Spaghetti
  • 2x tins of Tuna
  • 1x 14"x11" glass from a picture frame (which I ended up breaking! :shake:)
  • 1x desk lamp
  • Lots of sweets!:naughty:

Now, time to eat all those sweets!

That's a good effort Richard. Wonder if a tighter crop on some of the droplets may give a better image. Just zoomed in on my phone and i could see much more detail in them.

Blimey four fantastic takes on the theme's. I prefered your first Direction all the rest are excellent and I felt sorry for you with the cream.

The sweets are mad but you have done such a good job.

I look forward to seeing the rest of you 52's.

Your sweet is brilliant, i just wish i had the creative thought process and patience to do something like this, maybe by the end of the challenge i will

This has the potential to be an AMAZING shot IMO.

A few more drops or a tighter crop. Enough to show the OOF Bg and the droplets magnifying them.

A most excellent shot!

Hi Richard, what a great photo and worth the hours put into it!! Patience is def something you need for this, that and a stiff drink to have at the end!!:lol:

Did you use water or glycerine - I found that glycerine held shape better and for longer!!

Enjoy your sweets:):)

Thanks for the positive comments folks!

I used water for my drops Sarah, although if I attempt something like this in the future I will definitely look at using glycerine as they do spread out a bit and evaporate quite quickly too!
Thanks for the tip!

I've cropped it a bit and you were all right, it does look better cropped.
Thanks for suggesting it!

Love it!

Like it, much prefer the cropped version though as it's possible to make out the actual skittles and hence spot the link to sweet.

Wow! All credit to you for the effort in staging this one - I am amazed, well done.

Thanks! :D

Thanks, I think the cropped version is much better too.

I really like what you have done Richard, Sara has certainly started something here :D

It's good to see your set up and the details - Thanks :)

The tighter crop certainly does it for me
Thanks!

Hi Richard, a great take on the theme. Liking that idea, the cropped version is certainly better and works well
Thank you. :)

Cracking bright and colourful idea. I did something similar and it was quite hard getting overall focus.

Cheers.
Thanks, it was hard work wasn't it? :)

Thanks a lot! :)

Lol fantastic great sweet shots and I bet it was great fun getting used lol

Fantastic creative work Richard, a very different take on a popular subject for this weeks theme. Nothing more to add but  Iain

Hi Richard

Sweet.....love these shots...never tried this before but may have a go myself after seeing your...great work mister

I've had a rubbish couple of weeks which has led to me falling behind with my 52. :bang:
I finally managed to get out and about with the camera yesterday so it's catchup time! :geek:

Secure.

Not short of ideas for this week, but I was not able to translate what was in my head into anything that I was happy with so I ended up with a relatively safe shot.

I may come back to this topic as a reshoot later in the year.

Industry. I thought I would share a few shots for this week.

1.

industry cog by ricrico, on Flickr
I'm not really happy with the above shot but something keeps drawing me back to it!
I know it's a tight crop but I couldn't frame it any other way as there was loads of unwanted crap on either side.

2.

industry pylon by ricrico, on Flickr
I love the lines in this shot, but there's all kinds of weird stuff happening to the bars at the top and I don't know what I can do about it. :bang:

3.

fishingboat by ricrico, on Flickr
Not sure that this exactly screams fishing industry but it captured my heart when I saw it sat there all alone.

4.

industry building by ricrico, on Flickr
Definatly the most industrial of the four and my personal favorite.
Please excuse the odd angles, I was peeking over a fence!

Now, it's time to play catchup with everyones threads!

Really, like your #1. My only comment against is that it could maybe do with a bit more contrast just to sop it being a little flat and to bring out the colour difference between the metal and rust.

HI Richard

crikey you've been Industrious for Industry

Of the 4 images I think #1 & #2 win for me .

#1....like the mono & the sharpness of the cog , the DOF & POV  Maybe crop the rod slightly as seems very noisey & a little overpowering ?

#2....wonderful symetry ....really well done shot...

Cog for me, lovely shot!

Doh, I forgot to subscribe here!

I think your secure shot is excellent, tack sharp throughout and bang in theme:clap:

1 & 2 stand out for me from your industry set, with the pylon winning it.
I think the fishing boat looks a little dull, maybe it needs to be either B&W or go the other way and saturate the colours a bit:thinking:
I like the almost mono feel to number 4.

An excellent set and you're all caught up again:thumbs:

Onto week 7:-)
