The Ricoh GR has now (formally) been announced. Very similar in specification to the Nikon Coolpix A - but significantly cheaper and, from what I've seen, optically superior.

Suspect this may be making its way into a camera bag near me once the post launch pricing takes effect.

Is anyone else interested?

DPReview have a hands on preview here.

It's a shame they couldn't stick with a f/1.9 lens like on previous GR-D cameras, but I can appreciate that it wouldn't really be possible whilst keeping the same form factor.

What I'd like to understand is what new technology has suddenly enabled manufacturers to shoehorn these relatively huge sensors into these relatively tiny bodies. Presumably it's got more to do with the optics than the sensors.

I think it's a lot to do with software correction of aberrations that would normally require a huge lens to correct properly. Of course being a fixed lens it's inherently smaller and better optically to start with.

Good to see they have gone with a "ain't broke, don't fix it" approach for the shape of the body.

Of all the compacts I have tried and owned the GRD was the best to use by far (Shape, position of dials, UI). It was only really let down by the small sensor.

ePHOTOzine are saying £599 in the UK. That's a hard to resist price esp. compared to the foolish pricing on the Coolpix A.

Contradicting what I said about the body being a good shape, it is function over form and may not draw the attention as it just looks a bit dated rather than retro (X100) or modern (Sony RX)

If it does hit the market at £600, that's a fantastic price! I'd be tempted to become an early adopter which I never do.

I have previously owned a GRD II and a GX100, i really liked both cameras handling but was always underwhelmed with the IQ (as I have been with all smallcsensor cams). This could, at last, be my perfect carry all the time camera...

Looks like Clifton Cameras have it on pre-order at £599 (due mid may) so over 70% more expensive that the GRD IV (£349), but still cheap compared with the Coolpix.

The below table from the dpr preview makes no sense to me at all, surely if anything you'd want the fastest shutter speeds available at the widest apertures, not the other way around

Aperture Maximum available shutter speed
F2.8 - F3.2 1/2000th sec
F3.5 - F4 1/2500th sec
F4.5 - F5 1/3200th sec
<F5.6 1/4000th sec

That seems common with in lens shutters which I'd guess become more difficult to get to work the larger the appature.
The Nikon is much the same I believe but the Ricoh has the advanatge that theres a 2 stop ND filter built into the camera.

Not sure I'd call it a bargin so much as exposing the Coolpix A as being vastly overpriced at launch, you have to wonder how many times Nikon can get away with that after the D600 and J1/V1.
