I've just discovered you can get a cable remote. Shoots continuous too.

I'm now trying to imagine what I could use it for out on the street. What about:

> camera on a coffee shop table, shooting passing peeps? (pah)

> attach camera to monopod, hold it 6 feet above your head for shooting crowd scenes, and things?

What I'm working on is a way attach camera (around your neck) to phone to see what you are aimed at.

I don't imagine it will take over from the GRiii and I have concerns that I will lose part of the scene that I don't want to lose, but I could be surprised. :)

I'm used to 28mm David and so if I shoot 'from the hip' I cut bits off!
Focus is a bit more critical too so I've started to use Touch on the rear screen and thats working.
It's still a work in progress though. :)

You can also use the Image Sync app on a phone or tablet to control the camera and take pictures. You can tap the phone screen to focus and take a shot, as well as change settings etc.

I used to have a tiny remote for my Nikon DSLR but it would only work when clicked from in front. Anyway, I'll look into that. (y)

A pity I don't earn a commission! :)

It is a great camera and its small size means it's very easy to carry about wherever you go - it fits in a pocket. The IBIS is very good (the sunset shots above were handheld at between 1/8 - 1/20sec), the high-ISO noise is well controlled, and the lens is super sharp and the RAW files look great straight out of camera (or there are a range of JPG presets, or you can fuly customise them how you like / use recipes). The Snap Focus feature can be very useful for impromptu / street shots.

It does have cons (although I think the pros vastly outweigh them), the main ones for me being:
  • Battery life is poor. Probably 200 shots if you avoid chimping or doing other stuff with the camera, so a few spares are a must if you're going to be shooting all day.
  • No viewfinder. The LCD is great, but can be difficult to see in bright light / certain angles. You can get add-on optical finders, but I'm not sure they're worthwhile. I'd love it if they could add a pop-up EVF on a future model.
  • No flippy screen. This would increase the bulk of the camera, but it would be nice to have.
  • No flash. You can get a hot-shoe or remote flash if necessary, but it's something else to buy / carry. That said, I've never had need of a flash for the photography I've used it for.
  • Fixed focal length (28mm, or 40mm for the GRIIIx). The camera has an in-camera crop mode, so my GRIII allows 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm to be used, but the longer lengths reduce the megapixel count accordingly (to 16Mp and 12Mp IIRC). It depends on how you will be using the images as to whether this is a big problem. The above sunset shot with the yacht was taken with the 50mm crop. Alternatively, you can just shoot everything at full resolution and then crop in post. After typing this last point, it's only a con if you need longer (or much wider) focal lengths though - in which case you probably wouldn't use this camera anyway. The fixed prime lens is also a pro because of it's quality.

I actually do, but more for protection of the lens assembly than anything else.
I have a 1/4 Black Mist on the iii and a UV on the iiix, the NISI adapter encases the lens assembly nicely. :)

Yeah looks cool, but maybe not so pocketable.
 
Anyone using ‘touch-af > shoot’ on the LCD of their GR?
I’ve tried it and quite like it. :)

No, but I did an update today and I've now got AF Face Detection. Hope to try it out tomorrow.

How does Touch AF > Shoot work? One tap to focus another tap to shoot?

No, when set up it focuses and shoots on a single touch. For a quick shot it gives me a more accurate focus.
 
I'm getting an issue with my GR iiix that puzzles me!
I want it permanently on Auto ISO so I set it as Auto ISO > Max 12800/Min 100 > Min S/S 1/320th and save that setting in U1, U2 & U3.
All works fine for a short time but then I suddenly notice that it has jumped out of Auto ISO and into ISO 250 or 400 with shots being correspondingly under-exposed.
Going back into settings, I see that it has changed from Auto ISO and I cannot fathom why - anyone any ideas?
