Hi all,
I'm gonna try this here..
Lenses4Hire is unfortunately out of the lens above. I want to get one for RIAT, July 12 (Saturday).
I was wondering if anyone on here is in Leeds that I could hire their lens for the day?

Also, if anyone is going to RIAT and has the lens above they won't be using - would you hire it to me for the day? I am willing to pay you for the day what Lenses4Hire charges (£20 for the day)

I sold my 100-400 on here a while back and times like this I really miss it but I'm after a 70-200 IS for when my daughter gets born next month so I can't afford to buy the 100-400 for the airshow unfortunately.

Thank you kindly.
Patrick

Forgot to add I really just need this for the F35 fighter plane. So that's the plane I cannot miss... if you're desperate to have the lens back :)

Have you considered hiring a prime? I imagine you'll be at the long end of the 100-400 most of the time anyway, and would get better quality that way...

Can hire a prime or the Sigma zooms (50-500 or 150-500mm) or maybe the Tamron 150-600mm?

Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 lens with a 1.4x converter? :)

thanks. not thought about a prime actually... is a 400l decent? i've never really thought about them. i've always used a 100-400

scrap this - the 400 prime is out of stock as well :(

that sigma 120-300 2.8, i've not heard of it... is it good? i will need to use it with a 2x - or is 1.4 the only optimum recommended teleconverter IQ wise?

Either 400mm Canon prime will be better than the 100-400, as good as that lens is. The f5.6 is a peach, and the f4.0 is even better (and more expensive!).

the cheap 400 prime is out of stock.. not really sure about the more expensive version... i'm supposed to be saving up for a 70-200 II and i'm nearly there.. so don't really want to fork out £180 for the 400 prime and deduct from my 70-200 lens fund :(

Thanks. I didn't know calumet hires as well. I'll check. I only know of Lenses4hire

If you can get to calumet to collect they do a fri pm to mon am hire for the cost of one days hire. Extremly good value. Do need a hefty card deposit though.

Ouch! Thanks. I kinda am scared of places where they ask for deposits... they could try and scam me of my money by claiming I caused a scratch that was already there or something.. I've asked them for a quote anyway. They are in Manchester and I'm in Leeds so depending on how desperate I get, I could collect from them.

Will a 50-500 Sigma be ok for jets? I'll be using this on a Canon 1D mkIII body.

I would say that the Sigma 50-500 and 150-500 will be comparable to the 100-400mm lens quality wise. The new Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens is very good and will be sharper even with a 1.4x converter fitted imo.

A Canon 70-200mm F2.8L mk2 lens with a 2x converter would probably be alright too but that will be 400mm F5.6 rather than 420mm and F4 with the Sigma. The Sigma would be my choice personally but then again I've just ordered one :D

Thanks. Some reports for the Bigma says the long end is a tad soft so I'm still trying to decide. the 120-300 is unfortunately out of stock as well. I should not have left this too late but RIAT used to always have their dates at the end of July when it's wet and unpredictable so I didn't want to book anything in case it's raining on the day.. but this year they moved the date earlier which hopefully be a drier weekend.

I've got one if your local to North Tyneside. I have a 500 f4 600f4
100/400
All canon.
You can borrow any bar the 600 as I'll be using it all weekend.

Thanks - shame.. I think I'm too far :( But thank you for the kind offer. :)

The flash center hire lens I think . They're just by Costco

Ahh I didn't know... I'll check them out tomorrow.... I have just placed a rental for a 400 5.6 from lenslocker.co.uk as they only had 1 and I didn't want to miss it... but if flashcentre has it... I might be able to cancel my rental tomorrow.

I wouldn't be worried about that too much given the condition of the lens I hired. It worked perfectly but cosmetically it was how could I say "challenged", not seen one anything like it for sale on here.

How did you get on in the end ?

Hi - I found lenslocker.co.uk and I managed to get a 400 5.6 lens. They only had one left and I had to hurry as I didn't want to miss out even tho I couldn't find reviews for them but it was through paypal so I hoped paypal would help in case of problems but it turns out, they have an active profile on facebook so that's ok I hope.
Martin from there was helpful as well today and replied to my emails straight away.

I meant to call theflashcentre today but totally forgot... but I think they charge a deposit

Yeah you could be right , I think that they only waiver the deposit once you have used them a few times . They my not actually take a deposit like most places a credit card record is usually all they do , but not take any charge .
Glad you got sorted out though , just thought you could have borrowed my sigma 120-400 if it would have been fast enough for you .

Ahh cool - we should get together for a shoot or something. It's been a while since I went around town with people shooting.

Sounds good , there are quite a few of us around Leeds .

^^Uh oh... not good news but too late. i've bought my tickets and paid for the lens hire already.

I went to book my ticket this morning for the Saturday and they have sold out :banghead:
Yeah, that's why I did it the other day. I received an email from them to say they expected Saturday tickets to be sold out within the next 24hrs. I thought it was a ploy to get people to rush for the tickets and I really didn't want to buy it as RIAT has always been kinda in the wet when they hold their airshows and I wanted to wait till next week before getting my tickets to make sure the weather will be ok...

Those farmer fields used to charge what - £5 per car or something?
I do think RIAT's entry fee is quite steep... that's why I don't go often. this will be my 3rd visit (first was the last show of the F117, then I went when they had the F22... and now for the F35 - which could be grounded..haha!)
