RIAT 2012 - 300mm f4 vs 70-200mm f2.8

Hi,

Some advice please.

My camera is a D300s (working with 1.5x on the crop sensor)

I have a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8.
I can extend it with the tc2 making it 600mm f5.6

Is it worth investing in a Nikon 300mm f4 and a tc1.4
That would make it 630mm f5.6

How sharp would it be, what do you think.

I used a AF-s 300 f4 and kenko 1.4 TC last year at Fairford and it was perfectly sharp. this was on a d700 though, but shouldn't make much diffemce

nope (check your maths)

a 70-200 with a 2xtc equates to 140-400 f5.6

a 300mm f4 with a 1.4 = 420mm f5.6

to get to 600 you'd either have to use both teleconverters on the 70-200 or use the 2xtc on the 300mm f4 - either way it would then be an effective f8 and your AF wouldnt work properly

I think you will find the OP is working in FF focal lengths.

400mm x 1.5 crop = 600mm
300mm x 1.4 x 1.5 crop = 630mm

He's taking into consideration the effective focal length of the crop sensor as well

Used my 400/5.6 last time I went which was good but maybe a bit too tight sometimes, had second body with wide angle for reds display

Would probably use 300 next time

Yes, I was taking the crop into account,

Really I am after the best option.
But I don't want to spend £1,000 if there is no benefit.

I have sold a few items so have some spare cash.

Hopefully the weather will be better this year.

You could always try hiring a lens for the week through one of the 3 main places. Would be cheaper than an outright buy, and you'd be able to see if you'd made the right choice. Just my 2p.
