The wife just got an email from RHS as she's a member about their photography contest. Thought I'd have a punt but I'd read the T&Cs first.

There's the usual clause about "we can use them if we want", which is fine I get that they run these to get a bunch of images for low cost.

The real kicker for me was this:
2) Plant Portraits, Abstracts & Details, Gardens through the Seasons, Wildlife in
the Garden, Gardeners and Grow Your Own are categories open to adults (18
or over) and therefore incur an entry cost.
3) The entry fee consists of £4 (RHS members) and £5 (non-members) per print
entered in each adult category (18 or over)

So I'd be giving them a licence to an image, but not only that I'd have to pay them £5 per shot for the privaledge!

I suppose it depends what the prize is?

As always, the Ts and Cs are published - if you don't like them, don't enter!

Maybe its to weed out the inevitable poor quality images they will receive?

Not just quality .... but quantity!

Even the average local village show is being overwhelmed by hundreds of entries... an aunt of mine runs one, and they upped the entrance fee from 10p to £2 (without raising the prize to match!) over a few years in an attempt to simply to try and make it possible for the judges to look at all the entries...and all that happened was that people took it more seriously and entered even more entries! argh :gag:

"The Medici Cards Award
The image will be published by Medici Cards as a greetings card. The photographer will be credited and will receive 200 copies of their card."

What the hell are you going to do with 200 copies of the same greetings card? Even if I sent one to every single person I have an address for, I'd easily have more than 100 left and I couldn't frame all of them. I suppose the more senile relatives wouldn't remember if they received a second copy...

what is your point - if you don't agree with the T&C don't enter :cuckoo:

Every large organisation if going to want to use the image for thier own publicity.

The ones you have to watch are the ones that do a full rights grab to the point where they can resell your image. RHS doesn't appear to be one of those, so no problem.

Entry fee - well they have to cover the competition cost and prizes somehow don't they?

This is the same for pretty much every photographic competition I haven't entered - so I really don't see what the problem is

Flog them as signed with a proper copy of the image.
