Just saw an advert for a sharp TV. Seems to indicate they can get better colours by introducing some form of QUAD colour system (I think RGBY - adding YELLOW to the mix)....

Anyone have any more info and know whether or not this will lead to "new" colours in our TV's and Monitors?

Gary.
PS - Wasn't sure where to put this thread...

I've seen the advert too. Not sure where Sharp are in the race for tv technology, so this could be a fad... but I suppose time will tell. Love the fact that the bloke tells you how good the tv on the screen looks, but then reminds the viewer that they wont see any difference on there tv!!

I tend to put Samsung/Sony as the market leaders when it comes to innovation, so it'll be interesting to see if they go the same way....

It's the guy from Star Trek is it not? :)

Looks like a trip to Currys could be in order! Just watched the advert again, can't believe I didn't recognise him first time round.

Sony already use two types of green in their version of Bayer filtering. This kind of trick can help get your WB correct in-camera without intervention or reference, though I'm not sure if that's Sony's primary intent.

They did something like this with commercial print a few years back. In addition to the standard CMYK they introduced hexachrome. Two more colours. It was intended to give bags of punch and widen the gamut of press printed work. It is still used I think but never really took off for technical reasons (the extra two col's would emulsify more than the standard cmyk leading to varying issues) But this being a different medium....it would be interesting to see what it yields. If you get any more info mate post it. I'm still trying to get the missus to let me go bigger than 37 1/2 inch. How can a tv be 'ugly' ?

I watched sammy's latest 3D TV the other day! WOW!!! Looked superb and apparently updcales normal TV to 3D too?!

I suppose they need to keep the innovation going but the 3D TV could change the way we watch telly, really superb watching a 3D BluRay DVD

I want hardcore 3d tv - twin projectors creating a holographic image :D

didn't know you alredy get 3d blu ray.

Don't think it needs to be 3D? It's the way the video is put together and is displayed on the monitor. You still need the glasses.

What I meant was a 3D film on BluRay

For the same reason Bluray hasn't taken off like they thought it would 3DTV will take a long time to gain a foothold in the market.

There have been millions of 42" 50" and 55" TVs sold in the last 5 years, they're not going to get binned because 3D Tvs have hit the market, what happened to the days when we used something until it broke.

Your one to say use it until it broke, you normaly sell it before you have even got it.

I bought a Panny 42" HDTV a couple of years ago and don't think I've watched anything in HD yet!!! :)

Already prices are so low on big TV's I was going to give it to the wean for his room and buy something bigger - although I might hold off now and wait for the 3D TVs to come down in price - and to see if they take off.

I thnk BluRay would be better if recorders were cheaper but with hard drive recorders now so popular, any sort of media player will find it tough to make a foothold.

I bought my son a ps3 console. We have a panasonic viera plasma telly.

For normal tv I miss the old jumbo widescreen. The pic was great and we just enjoyed watching it really. I bought the panasonic to keep up with the Jones' to be honest. The pic was odd to view and I thought the old telly was better. Sky looked all bitty and pants through it. Freeview was a ton clearer and punchy colours but made your eyes hurt. Still missed the old box.
Finally bought a hdmi cable and got the ps3. Cars (pixar) blew my pants off. Wall-e did the same and then some. The clarity is incredible. Thinking this would be the norm I bought forbidden kingdom on bluray and it was not the same. It seemed that the animated films really looked amazing through bluray and the norm did not (based on one film i know). Along came Avatar. Watched it at the flicks in 3d. Wow...wonderful. Good in 3d but I figured it would merely be ok on dvd/bluray as the story was just good and not mindblowing. Bought it on bluray and its fantastic! not 3d granted but it is really good to watch. The downside of bluray, on a ps3 at least, is there is a very (VERY) slight judder on panning shots. Some folk do not notice it but when you do!....oh boy you actually focus on it.
Normal telly I would have a jumbo analogue again if things allowed (I realise its dead) but the bluray thing is pretty damn good and for a short sighted special brew lover...I can see things in wonderful detail with lovely depth that I never could before. It really shows with animated stuff but not so much with conventional. I would love to get hold of a bluray Baraka, great film.
