hi

i have a canon 400D and i wanted to know what the difference is and what they do and also when best to use both.

cheers in advance

They are both working spaces for colour information.

AdobeRGB has a wider range of colours available and people often make the mistake of thinking they'll have more colours as a result. It doesn't work that way, with an 8bit image you still only have 16.7m colours. AdobeRGB has the potential for more saturation (mainly in pinks and greens) but at the expense of banding because you're trying to fit more data into the same space.

Stick to sRGB, using AdobeRGB just opens up the door to a whole heap of problems and questions such as "why do the colours look wrong when I post images online?".
