weekly RG Miller 2016 - 52 Challenge

Hi Richard. Love letters - definitely personal. Nice take on the theme - I like the composition, especially those revealing words on display.

Hi Richard.
Lovely "Personal" shot. Perfect for the theme.

WK13 Effort

At first sight this looks like a fairly unremarkable 400 meters of road. It is in fact the B6344 road at Crag End, near Rothbury - which has just re opened after nearly three-and-a-half years and £10million spent on repairs!
The physical construction work involved driving hundreds of concrete filled steel tubes up to 80 feet into the ground, with a large concrete beam across the top and 144 ground anchors connected around 100 feet into the ground to stop the land from moving. The geology of the ground was so difficult a great deal of design and investigation work was needed before repairs could actually start.

The construction work could only start in February 2015 after engineers spent the previous year installing a pumping system that could remove millions of litres of water from the ground underneath the landslip.

The work was made even more complex as the landslip took place in a very sensitive environmental area containing a number of protected species.

Quite an EFFORT! Fairly fits the theme !

Good one Richard, really like the story behind that, something for the people who wonder why roadworks seem to take so long just to replace a bit of tarmac.

Richard, the Personal image is really nice idea for the theme , such a good back story for your effort theme, nice image too.

Nice to hear how much thought is put into the environmental impacts of such schemes. Definitely Effort Richard. Nice composition with that perspective of the road disappearing into the distance.

Hi Richard, Personal is a nice shot but it does feel quite underexposed to me. I realise that may have been the intention, but as others have said, a bit more shadow detail at least could help. I also think - to my eyes - the underexposure might be leading me to think it's a touch softer than it actually is??

Effort is a good composition and capture. Sky is pushed a touch too far for me personally in processing but overall it's a very solid image, on theme and I do like your choice of portrait orientation. Good job!

Interesting back story, it puts the image dead on theme.
I'm going to disagree with Andy, I like the sky in the shot, it balances the concrete road edging at the bottom.
The strong colours in the image make the shot work in my opinion (it wouldn't have worked ona a damp overcast day).

Hi Richard, thanks for dropping into my thread a couple of weeks ago and I'm sorry it's taken so long to return the visit! I've just had a quick trawl through your whole thread and I've picked out my favourites so far:

Old - off to a strong start with this one. Lovely textures in the old camera body and works well against that vibrant background colour.
Metal - well lit to bring out all the textures of the worn metal, and a good choice of background.
Happy - I love the expressions and the composition, and also the fact that you can see it's cold weather and yet they're still having fun
Danger - that's a cracker! The red flag screams danger before you even take in the rest of the scene. Nice colours and contrast.
Personal - great idea, really well executed. The dark backdrop makes the letters stand out immediately, and the old-looking envelopes and the teasing line of text make this a really compelling image. Very nice indeed
Effort - at first glance this is already an impressive stretch of road, but your text underlines just how impressive! Great to have that lovely colourful sky and trees in the scene as well.

Good luck with the rest of your 52!

Great image for Effort Richard I love the lines that draw your eye into the image like a few others have said I would have been tempted to crop the top a little

Thanks Andrea! Some kind comments there thanks! This year is my first go and it is certainly a challenge to get a considered image submitted every week! Having time to comment on the fabulous ( and often humbling ) submissions from the rest of the crew is especially difficult.

The huge amount of effort everyone puts in each week certainly adds to the whole learning process!

Thanks for stopping by!

Back story explains your Effort shot brilliantly Richard....Nice one.

Artificial - A good take on the theme
Personal - lovely set up especially the words peeking out just enough to give a hint at the content.
Effort - Your right a lot of time and effort went into that repair great backstory

Richard Hi, liking your technology photo. Great capture, beautiful detail, excellent DoF

Wonderful discovery Richard and so well taken - the placement and colour so nicely capture the age and condition. Great choice for the theme.

You mean that isn't cutting edge now? Dang !
Good shot, but I would have liked to have had more space on the right as it is a front light and thus looking that way, if it had been a rear light then that would have been perfect.
