Yes
Have recently purchased some Yongnuo RF602s + transmitter.

Just a quick question, will the modelling light on the 430 exii work off camera with these when you press the DOF button on the 1dmkiii?

if no one answers this for you. i will check when i get home on the 5dII. Not got high hopes though as really depends on what combination of contacts are used between the flash and the camera when mounted directly.

The triggers dont have all contacts that are available.

OK ........... got home and checked ......... sadly does not work.

How then, would I check the lighting levels prior to shooting? Just trial and error I suppose?

Light meter ?

That's OK for ambient light, but how would I check the flash levels without going back and forth and adjusting their power output .... would take ages me thinks

No, you take the trigger (or a 2nd trigger) with you and fire it from your have with the light meter in your other hand. That is how I do it. I switched to full on Safari lights which actually do have a light BUT prior to that I messed with some FITP triggers and flashes.

Ahah.............. becoming clearer now. Is there a setting on the light meter for flash then? Sorry if I sound thick, but new to this off camera flash malarky

They mostly have 2 settings FLASH and AMBIENT. In ambient mode they just measure the light when you press the button and record it on the screen. In FLASH mode when you press the button the meter goes into a waiting mode where it sits there and waits for a sudden burst of light. It then records this level of light on the screen. This means that you press the button and hold the meter in front of your model then press the button and the meter records the light from the flash reaching the model.

In either mode you would have programmed into it the ISO and shutter speed so the light meter can then give your aperture. You then feed this figure into the camera OR alternatively you adjust the light until you get the aperture you want.

Which model light meter?
Definitely the quickest way to set up

I hope you mean experiment with photographing the pet cat :suspect:

I have a large fluffy puppy for experimenting :) I am trying to find a shop dummy with arms, legs and hair for a similar reason.

My choice is the Sekonic LS308S or if you are feeling particularly flush the 358. There is no real world advantage to spending lots of money on the light meter. Some of the expensive ones will trigger your lights for you and things like that but the reality is that is not absolutely necessary. You should pay about £90 for a decent LS308S boxed with instructions etc 2nd hand and about £130-140 new.

So what settings should I be aiming for 1/180 sec f/5.6 maybe?

Try 1/160 @ f/8 as a starting point

p.s @ Cowasaki - got my 358 for £85 as new from the TP classifieds. Was aiming for a 308s at first though

You were VERY lucky that is TOO cheap for that light meter, way too cheap!
