Reverse township tours

Yeah, okay, it's a different perspective but I'm not sure it's really a role reversal. I've been to quite a few of the townships for work and personal reasons - during the apartheid era and afterwards - but I've never been on any of the tours. Don't they normally visit Wandies and various places associated with "the struggle", where tourists are expected to take photographs, rather than walk around at random?

There were, and still are, areas in the townships I wouldn't go to, but the same is true for a lot of UK cities; and most black township residents I've met are quite friendly and hospitable. As far as the video is concerned, many people in this country don't like being singled out and photographed either, and I'd probably be irritated if I was sitting in a coffee shop and someone started pointing a camera at me and snapping.

Likewise I have spent plenty of time in townships (ranging from Langa in CT, Motherwell in PE and Mdantsane in East London) for work reasons. I have seen some tours in Motherwell and Mdantsane but these are normally 'organised' Like you say, not necessarily people walking about randomly though.

Just thought it was an interesting perspective.
