Hello i have just spent the last few days revamping my website. I still have to add a lot more images into the gallerys, but i am getting close to finishing the revamp for now. Comments please. www.markheywood.co.uk

Not bad at all, but really do not use Times New Roman on a website. Ever. Really, never do it.

Otherwise I like it, and the photos are, without exception, exemplary :)

I like the layout and approach

I don't like Times myself, but it doesn't bother me as much as dakid it seems :D

But I really think you should let someone have a good proof-read of it for you, as there are really too many spelling mistakes in it, and quite a few grammar ones, which lowers the otherwise good & professional image in my book

Hey there Mark...

I've looked at your www site before and this is an improvement... especially with the number of menu items. You have some cracking shots on there, but I think the site could be further improved as I see a few items that let you down on the home page.

As dakid says, never use TNR font on web pages... those fonts look really awful. Best stick to Verdana, Trebuchet or Arial in my opinion, they make for easier reading on the eye. I'd suggest you stick to the same font you have used for your left hand navigation menu - that font is very easy to read.

May I make a suggestion - perhaps instead of just using a rollover for colour of font on the menu's, you used a total background colour change to make the rollover effect more pronounced - but heck, that's just my opinion.

Also - I am not sure about the blown parts of the filmstrip in the header, they cover some of the lettering on your site name which is quite off putting.

There's a few typo's too, and Includes in your second para doesn't need a capital 'I'...!!! You also don't need the 'the' as the second word in the 5th para - it's not needed and is grammatically incorrect.

Also, this para...

Tel: 07903 142 572 A private number will be given to genuine clients

...suggests not all your clients are genuine and doesn't look very professional. I'd suggest removing the word 'genuine'.

Finally, I'd move the © and text to the bottom of the page, you don't really want that stuck up there at the top eh...;)

Thanks guys the spelling is not my best point, i did have a friend read over it for me. She is an English teacher so she is to blame for any spelling or grammer thats still in there.

An English teacher proofed it and still left it with those errors! No wonder the kids of today can't write for toss :lol::lol:

Seriously though, get someone else to have a go as there were mistakes on every page I look at (which I think was most of them)

Purely a personal thing but whenever I see a website that opens with "I am a professional JOB TITLE..." I immediately think uh-oh. It's as if you're assuming the reader was doubting you to start with.

I agree with pxl8 plus I'd go further and lose the "welcome to my website" header and the put the copyright line at the bottom of the page.

I would lose the equipment list altogether, your address is on the tameside site you link to and that's an open invitation for mr tea leaf to come shopping for little nigellas christmas pressies.

Speaking of the tameside link, have it open in a new window or tab, never have a link that takes someone away from your site, that could lose you business.

Using simpleviewer is good, the images are quick to load on it ans easy to get to, only problem is what it does to thumbnails but that's no biggy.

On my monitor the site is pretty narrow, it takes up only half the screen width but I understand why you have it that way.

One other thing, the banner at the top doesn't look professional, it looks like you stuck it there temporarily while you made something better? It ties back to what pxl8 said earlier, you don't need to tell people you're a professional, the fact that you are advertising your services at all does that.

Hi PapaLazarou,

How was your experience using Mr. Site?

nice . i like it.lovely images.leave the spelling mistakes in. gives the clients summat to mention to mention to break the ice.
put the price up on your basic package.
and i thought we were cheap.
:suspect: Sorry Inaneredstripe, I'd say that's extremely poor advice and would have to say that this is a very bad idea to be totally honest! If I went to a site and was looking for a particular service and noticed these type of mistakes, it would most certainly put me off.

Perception IS reality. Create the impression that you are unprofessional and, to clients, you are.

Simple as.

Totally agree MM about the speelllingggs

But if perception IS reality, what is reality really?
Hey Dave... could spark a great convo this... philosophical debate commences.

'Reality', is in fact, whatever you want it to be, and usually relates to what and how you perceive things. To others, quite simply, you are how you're perceived - which may or may not be as you actually are!!

Your call.

i like the overall site. but it hacks me off you stated all the memory cards you own. i quite like seeing your equipment, but thats because im interested, i dont see it as very profesional. but otherwise i like it. Accept the banner that says "profesional photographer"

it just seems... a little "well duh.." like your trying to hard to make people see you as a pro.

Just my opinions. Good otherwise though.

Ok - prepare for a harsh review (after all your potential clients will give you one!)

My first impression was "Oh dear God No!!" - and If I was looking for a photographer, it would have been followed by a swift click back to google.

The main issue is the top banner - leaving aside the fact that it looks like the title sequence to a 1960's Film programme - I would have the following questions:

Do you shoot film? - whilst some still do - the image of the 35mm film strip makes it look dated - as does the terrible font choice.

Are you a professional? - Stating that you are seems weird. Also, who the hell are you??

By this I mean why does it not have your name at the top (and then if you really must - the words "Professional Photographer" underneath as a sub heading)
It's only by reading down through the text to your email address that I find out that your name is Mark Heywood. This is clearly wrong.

Whilst titles for each page are a good idea - the homepage title is a little redundant - a better word to use than "homepage" would be "Welcome"

And one other thing - I looked at your Products & Promotions Gallery - I would remove the shot of the Pate (if that's what it is) - having worked in advertising as an art director I can assure you that food photography is a fine art which requires not only a good photographer, but the skills of a home economist (the person who prepares and dresses the food for photography). This shot is not doing you any favours.

Told you it would be harsh! - but I figure that if you really want your business to expand, you need to know what is off putting.

I would have a google around and see if you can find a site that you would hire - then try to decide what it is about that site that you like and work that into your designs.

Hope that helps.
