Hi folks!

I was a member and occasional visitor here a long, long time ago but for personal reasons had taken a break from photography for the last few years. I am now in the position to return to my favourite hobby and am also thinking of selling a few of my film cameras and investing in a DSLR. I'm down in Kent and mainly enjoy architecture and a bit of landscape when I get the chance. Still love film, as well as stuff like lomography and instagram, all good fun!

With my love of Nikon and the price bracket in mind, I'm thinking of a Nikon D5200. A quick question too, I'm wondering whether to buy body only and then 28mm and 50mm primes lenses, or to buy the kit with the 18-55mm. The cost isn't a worry but are primes still the option for quality or doesn't it matter nowadays? Also, is dust or damage still an issue to the sensor if regularly changing lenses? Forgive these questions, as I say, I've been out of the hobby for a long time!

Many thanks, Ben. :)

Hi Ben and welcome to TP, again.

Primes are still the best for the ultimate image quality, but the zooms available are pretty good too.

Dust can still be a problem. First line of defence is to take precautions when changing lenses (I have managed to avoid any dust problem that was not cured by using a blower simply by being carefull)
Many cameras have anti-dust devices that vibrate the sensor at start up or on demand to shake dust off and catch it on a sticky pad.

Hello Ben! Welcome to TP!

The kit lens is a very useful lens, but perhaps go for a 50mm prime to help define your photography a little more? There are massive differences between zooms and primes and most peoples inquisitive leap is from the kit lens to a nice prime. The 35mm F/1.8 is another thing to consider!

Dust is a problem, but just get a Giotto rocket and you'll be fine :)

Hi both, thanks for your replies! I think I'll go for the two prime lenses and will order in the next few days. I'd better get eBaying too to help cover the cost!! :D

Hi Les, thank you!

Well, after much deliberation I have ordered a D7100! I was originally looking at the D5200 with various lens combinations, but thinking of the cost involved I realised it would be sensible to go for the D7100 18mm to 105mm kit. Should arrive soon...!! :)

I can't comment on your lens questions as I've never been to the dark side.
On the dust issue however I've always been told that prior to changing lenses you should switch off the camera as the electronics can produce a charge which attracts dust. Don't know if this is fact or urban myth, but as it costs nothing to do, I err on the side of caution.
