Returning 40D

After my problems with my new 40D, repeated in another way yesterday evening during a booked Kid shoot when the mirror decided to freeze up for about 20 seconds and no image taken - refusing to clear with battery removal and replacement and camera insisting only to work on the automatic modes Canon have decided to replace it.

As soon as the shop has the next delivery in it will be exchanged. Having cleared all settings again, today it is behaving its self except for one mirror up freeze, cleared by clearing all settings and starting again. Canon did not seem too surprised and offered the exchange as under two weeks old immediately. Will report back when i get the new one.

Fortunately got my shots in an Mother over the moon with the results!

I assume you had a backup camera?

To be honest, if I had bought a new camera and it performed so poorly operationally then I would be livid. This isnt the first and certainly wont be the last issue by the sounds of it with regard to this new camera. Sounds like Canon are having massive QC issues.

Glad you delivered the results but what if you didnt have a backup and you were left dry with just a knackered 40D? What would that have done for your reputation/business? Pro/Freelance photographers need to be able to rely on their kit. Just like taxi drivers rely on their cars and builders their ladders.

I would of called Canon (or Nikon if it were one) and given them a royal shouting match. We buy their equipment, we trust its reliability and our income is secured by it. Top end QC is a must in such a cut throat business.

I think being a professional is always about having a plan B i.e. a back up body. Whilst it is not good to have equipment fail we have to remember that a camera is a mass produced item with a complex set of electronics & mechanical parts that could potentially fail at any time
 
I indeed did not trade in my 350D keeping it as a back-up body. Managed to complete the shoot using the "portrait mode" and being very careful where the points of focus were placed. Told Canon it became a very expensive "Point and Shoot" camera!

The daft thing is that the camera functions perfectly for a while - then suddenly takes it upon its self to play up. Have a wedding coming up so will be using the 350D and 40D and possibly the old Canon A1 35mm ready and waiting in the car!
