Enjoy not having to watch the clock everyday. Freedom to do as you want, enjoy I am sure it is well deserved. Only another ten years for me.:)

Thanks. Not really got any plans other than I have another house that my daughter lives in that needs a fair bit of work doing to it, so that should keep me busy for the next 12 months. I have started doing some voluntary work on a canal restoration program that will keep me fit. The wife doesn't retire for a couple of years yet (we still need the money) then we can start making some plans.
 
I am 16 years into my retirement I am the first generation of my family to ever have actually retired. Previous generations just worked till they dropped.

It will be on you before you know it. Put some money away, I didn't. saying I will worry about that when the time comes, well it came quicker than I thought. But looking back I have done things in my life that some people could only dream of.

You are right about that. my wife and I run quite successful business's also no kids to bleed us dry :-)

So we are just planning to 55 and then its to our villa in Greece and take it from there.
 
I have 12yrs to go before I reach retirement age. I am fortunate in that my job is pretty much relaxed and I like to call where I work The Retirement Home. I just feel like I am getting the practice in now.
There definitely won't be a convertible or any rounds of Golf that's for sure. I'd rather die the day before I retire.

I retired two months shy of my 55th birthday, make sure if you can to go when you plan. Know lots of people who bottle out, too many people carry on then peg out just after finally retiring.

Three years for me come the end of October, haven't regretted it for one minute, loads to do and not missed seeing work colleagues at all
 
I think much of it depends on what you want from retirement as to also what age you work till.
A few of my friends want the big house and lots of travel and a quite a busy social side which will need funding.

Me and the wife just really want to get out of this country and the rat race and find some peace and quiet to be ourselves.
We have a villa in Greece in a quiet little town which we rent out at the moment with an agency which will become our home when the time is right, we then plan that as a base.

I 'retired' at 52 and was able to spend a few years doing some consultany to keep fresh, finally retired at 56..... now nearly 61 and my only regret is not walking away at 48!

At 50, most will have fewer tomorrows than yesterdays. At my age that ratio is a given.

Retirement is liberating but sitting in a chair watching daytime TV is not retirement!

My current project is a coastal tour of Ireland.... Day 14......

Congrats Neil from a semi-retired individual of 2 years standing, you've done it at a great time of the year for getting stuck into outdoor things and keeping busy. That'll keep you occupied through to the winter months, but keep an eye open for things to interest you when it's too cold for outside tasks. I've also taken Raymond's advice about buying a convertible, but it's 10 years old so wasn't too expensive! I'd advise you to keep some kind of structure to your time, such as having the weekends off, especially while your wife is still working, but enjoy it for what it is! (y)
 
Neil, plan on using your Hobby or other interest as your main object of the Day to start off with, this means that there is no sudden stop in your activities. I have seen a few Retirees give up and Die when they stop work because they had nothing to fill their day. Also if there is some little job to be done do it during the normal working week (unless urgent) and not the weekend, make the weekend a time for relaxing.

Congrats on retirement, you'll now wonder how you managed to do things around the house and work at the same time, never enough time in the day now. Next thing you will be going to the computer to do something and by the time you get there you will have forgotten what you were going to do in the first place, does with me now.:):)
 
I retired early few months after my 60th. Now at 74 dont have time for a lot of what I want to do, not enough hours in the day.

Its a game trying to find time for holidays only had 3 so far this year adding up to 5 weeks, still a long way to go in catching up on last year only about 13 weeks all told.

I could retire next month, but will be working on for another year. When I do retire I'll have time to enjoy photography more, and explore some commercial work that I currently can't commit to due to my full time job. I also have projects that have been on the back burner for too long, and other hobbies.
 
I first retired at 44 a few years back {2001}, after 3months I started working part time to occupy my spare time, since then I've had several jobs and have been full time for the last 13 years in various positions, I just need to work to occupy my mind, and the extra money, I can always find a way to spend/waste? Every year I take stock but just can't give up, I suppose I might drop off in harness one day but at the moment I winge about work but go back every week. If it suits you enjoy.
 
Def' had more time to myself when working, often contemplate taking employment then see how the rest of the family cope...

I took early retirement 15 years ago. On my last day I had doubts as to whether I was doing the right thing. That lasted until I got off the train and into my car to drive home. All of a sudden all doubt disappeared. Never regretted my decision. Never bored and not enough time to do all I want to do.
Plenty pastimes and being physically active (but not to excess) helps me a lot.

That's where my worries are. I haven't done enough saving for retirement to be honest, and my weekly income from now on is equivalent to what I used to earn in 1 day. We own 2 properties so on paper we easily have enough to last us the rest of our lives. If we live in a tent ;). I can always get a part time job if need be but couldn't continue doing my job anymore it was just too physical. The wife says everything will be fine and to stop worrying, so it must just be a man thing.

I have one at the moment, although that could all change now we have left the EU, maybe they will offer me redundancy + early retirement first though.
