So, if you have a jpeg that has been edited in Photoshop, and in the metadata has various versions of the "xmp.iid"s, how can/do you restore the image back to the original, or one of the other versions (if you only have the final jpeg)?

Is this possible or am I making stuff up?

Don't think it's possible. xmp files, also referred to as sidecar files, are normally associated with RAW, and hold details of any edits made, . Deleting an xmp file means that when the associated RAW file is opened, it will appear 'as shot'.

It doesn't work with jpeg, with a raw file the original is untouched and the edits that you make are stored in the xmp file that simply tell photoshop how it looks after the edits, when you then save it out (or open it) it displays the edited version, you can't overwrite the original raw file. With jpeg when you save you overwrite the original the xmp might have all the edits but theres no original to refer back to, if you see what I mean.
I always back up after downloading the pics from my camera, so if I do make a mistake with a jpeg I alway have the original saved somewhere, are the pics still on the card? if you haven't reused it they can still be recovered even if you formatted it.
