There was a story in the paper recently about a wee girl needing to travel to Edinburgh for cancer treatment on public transport due to bad luck of the bridge failure and the hospital flats all being occupied
Her mum was obviously worried about getting up at 4am to get her ready and be there in time for her morning appointment, then the long haul home again when she was weak and open to infection. Almost made me cry to be just reading it
So, to the good bit
A local events and luxury gift business owner stepped in, took her through by helicopter and gave her a luxury flat for the week of her treatment. I almost cried again haha
Just thought I'd share as it often seems such a bleak world it really touched my heart.

What an awesome story, the poor girl having to go through that is just heartbreaking, no matter the age but kids it really effects you :(
It goes to show, no matter the ills of the world there really is some bloody lovely people still around.

It is a rare thing! a posetive news story these days, lifts the spirit!

Philanthropy is indeed alive and well, good on those businesses :) Reading the article it appears it was a separate business that gave them the use of the apartment........not all about the £'s but said companies reputational 'value' would be nicely boosted.

I was also cheered by the stories of community spirit in the Lake District with neighbours taking in flood evacuees and the council centres then not being too crowded.

Plenty of nice (rich) people about, many do it without seeking the attention themselves. Nice to see a positive story being reported though, we could do with more of them, but from experience I know that many don't want their name in the papers...

I heard a fella in Blackpool who had a five star hotel on the radio. Inviting anyone in trouble after the floods to move in while he's quiet and doing maintenance etc
It's great to see charity and compassion are thriving.
I love that couple who won the big lottery win, they just go around helping people. What a great life

Yes, well done. I'd really prefer it if the donors insisted on anonymity though...

I can see where you are coming from, i think it depends on what the situation is really..

saying that i would want to know who it was, i wouldn't feel like i had properly thanked them if i couldn't do it in person

I'm split on that
But I have no problem with any of them getting some kind of recognition should they choose to go public.
I try to avoid business with proven issues such as treating staff poorly, avoiding tax, zero hour contracts etc etc, so it's only right we get the positive info too

A big hug is always better in person :D

And the fast majority do it exactly that way.

Ps. Doesn't mean the recipient doesn't know, merely that they don't desire press attention. There are lots of decent people about doing good deeds every day.

Saying that, it is nice to see it published in the press as a good news story vs those nasty rich people that one normally hears. Totally forgetting the biggest contribution to the national income and all the good things that happen with that as well. ;)

Fixed that for you

Fixed that for you (y)
Zero hour contracts are a blight on working people and should be banned, imo.

I can never understand the thought process that believes that it is alright for companies who make millions of pounds profit, such as amazon, starbucks etc to pay as little tax as is legally possible. We all suffer as a consequence, honestly do you think it would break amazon if they paid fairer share of tax on their profits.

I've been on several for nearly 20 years, I love the flexibility it brings.

Zero hour contracts obviously suit some, but large corporations use them to maximise profits and minimise workers benefits
And don't get me started on "modern apprenticeships" which are just an excuse to exploit the desperate but I better not start ranting about greedy bosses in a feel good thread :D

It's your choice to feel bad about them, as I highlighted I love them a very good flexible method...I don't have this negativity towards them, and see no need for a rant....Its all positive...

I am self employed so have no contract but that's my choice, sounds like yours too
Doesn't stop me caring about the ones who can't get full time, get texts to say they're not needed/are needed at very short notice etc

No I am not self employed. Doesn't sound like a good working relationship when they do that. That is not the fault of the type of contract. But ultimately it is very simple; if someone doesn't like it then why work there. It's a choice, if some one does it to me once or twice I could forgive them. A third time would really make me think whether I want to provide them with the benefit of my experience.

I think that the "flexibility" is mainly for the employer rather than the employee if they are still required to be available for work and not allowed to work for other companies. There should be some sort of trade off like a higher minimum wage in exchange for the extra flexibility it offers the employer.

It only takes a little to give a lot. That's what most people nowadays seem to forget.

Agreed as you could have read I added "exclusivity" to the undesirable part. I don't think it is even legally enforceable and if I am not mistaken the coalition actually made it illegal.

Yup on 26th May 2015 those nasty Tories made exclusivity clauses on zero hours contracts unenforceable.

I've only ever been on "one" I was taken off a salaried position, as a precursor to being made redundant, a couple or so years back,
I was made redundant 1 year and 11 months after employment started, so the tight unit didn't have to pay redundancy either.
I was paid for the hours I worked, not the salaried position I was employed on.
It cost the t***t thousands, he never saw that coming :D
