Resizing to a print size

Sorry if this seems stupid, but have been asked to size my WHF image to print size 18x12 inches at 300dpi. I have searched but could not find the answer as to how to do this. Do i simply resize the image to 18x12 in PS4, I cant believe it can be that easy.:)
 
Go to the image - image size dialog and uncheck the 'resample' box. Change the dimensions to inches and the resolution to 300 and see how close you are to your desired size. If bigger you can crop if smaller you need to resample to increase the pixels.
 
Thanks for reply. When i have done the resize bit how can i see what sort of print size i have. Sorry to be appearing thick, but then i am old:D:D
 
18x12" @300dpi is 5400x3600

Just resample your picture to that many pixels and you should be set.
 
Print size is the size you've just resized it to. If you've resized it to 18 x 12 at 300dpi then the print size is 18 x 12 at 300dpi.

I hope your questions are answered, but just to say you can't see on your monitor 'what sort of print size' you will have as your monitor typically displays at 72ppi. You have to trust your software!
 
Thanks very much for your replies. I now have it the size shown in the screen shot above. Only way i could get it that way was to remove/uncheck "constrain etc", image does not look weird so reckon that will do. Dont have much hair to pull out to be honest:bang:
 
That means you'll need to crop your image as it has a different aspect ratio from the print size..

As it stands now i have 18x12 inches, 300dpi and pixel count 5400x3600, as i say image has not distorted so going to let it go at that. Cannot claim to understand it and to be honest dont think i ever will:lol: Thanks again.
 
Yeah, size vs. resolution is totally mindbending until one day you wrap your head around it and it's suddenly as clear as day.

(I had the need to get into a bit of video editing recently where I discovered there's even the concept of pixel aspect ratio :bang:)

But sounds like you've got what you needed now!

I have tried to do mine but it looks awfully distorted should this be the case,? and just send it in.

I have no one to help me on this :shrug:
 
What are you trying to do? Your original image has to be the same aspect ratio as the size you want it to be, that is to say the lengths of the sides must be in the same proportions.

If you want to end up with 18" x 12" the sides must be in those proportions, 18:12, before you resize it. The easiest way to do this is with the marquee tool.

Select the rectangular marquee tool (the selection tool, which looks like a dashed box). On the control panel at the top change Style to "Fixed Ratio" and enter 18 and 12 as the width and height. Now when you draw a marquee it will be in the correct proportions.

Draw a select with the marquee and then go Image > Crop. You now have an image in the correct 18:12 aspect ration, and you can now size it as described previously.
