I have been advised (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=5750331#post5750331 post 23) to raise my query here.

I am trying to resize images to allow me to post them to the TP gallery so that I can then post them in threads for constructive comment. Problem is that they are coming out too small and I can't work out how, EASILY, to get them to comply with TP rules (maximum size of side = 800 pixels; max of 200kb).

I am using Photoshop Elements 11 to resize as follows:

- in the processor I go to Image/Resize/Image Size

- change resolution to 100 (if I change resolution AFTER changing width then the width alters without me meaning it to)

- change width to 800 pixels (which automatically changes height to 533 pixels)

- I leave the three boxes (scale styles, constrain proportions & resample image) ticked

- I alter the sampling formula (or whatever it is called) to 'Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction)'

- FIRST QUESTION - is there any way I can tell at this stage what the reduced size will be and in particular if it will be reduced to 200k

- click ok and get a reduced image

- SECOND QUESTION - is there any way I can tell at this subsequent stage what the reduced size will be and in particular if it will be reduced to 200k

Just to illustrate ...... by trial and error I managed to get the following image to be < 200kb and < 800 pixels. But it took a long time and I have other things to do with my life.

Any help gratefully received and hopefully I will soon be able to post some pictures for comment

First answer. No (in a word!). The file size is determined by the JPEG quality you save the file at.
Second answer. See first!

Once you've resized to 800x533 pixels, go to "File > Save As" then choose the JPEG option. Then hit Save. You'll get some options, one of which will be a slider to determine the quality (0 - 12). A setting of 5-8 should get the file size below 200kB (Click the preview box and it'll tell you the file size). A final click will save the pic reduced in pixel and file size.

Ok - thanks - will give it a go

You're welcome, glad to have been of assistance!

Thanks Tangy - PSE 11 is ok for the time being - now that I know how to do it - but if I ever have to do loads in one go then I will give it a go
