I'm only just starting to get my head round photoshop but am having a few difficulties with resizing images.

I have recently taken some shots of my friends six month old son and i am currently in the middle of processing the shots in photoshop.

My problem is that i am making a disc of all of the photos so that she can print them but i would like them all to be 7 x 5 in size. How do i resize the images to 7 x 5 in photoshop? When i have tried changing the image size, the picture becomes distorted!

Any help much appreciated - and apologies for the stupid question!

Thanks in advance.

relatively new here myself, but I believe the only way to do this is select the crop tool, put 7inch in width box, 5inch in height box, choose your resolution, usually 300dpi if you want to print the images, 96dpi if you only want to display them on a computer screen, then drag the crop tool over your picture to a suitable place and press the tick to complete the action. As 7 x 5 is not the same proportion as your camera will take the picture, you will have to loose some of the detail.

Can be long winded if you have to crop several pictures though. but I am sure someone on here will be able to tell you a quicker way.

Simon.

Is the picture currently in the same proportions?

a 6x4 image is the same as 7.5x5 so if you just change it to 7x5 it would distort. You can use the crop tool set at 7"x5" which would work as has been stated but if you want to keep the whole image and print at 7x5 then you need to increase both axis by the same amount

ie

crop to 6x1.667 by 4x1.667

ie 7" x 4.67"

then once you have THIS crop then increase the canvas size to 7 x 5

click on change canvas size, change it to 7 x 5.

What you will now have is the image with a small white band at the top. This is the biggest version of the image on THAT canvas size.

Many thanks for the quick replies, that helps massively.

I've had a go at resizing some of the pictures and some are not in the same proportions (as mentioned above), is there a way to crop out what i don't want in the picture but still have the picture size i need?

Many thanks :)

Yes just select the crop tool and set the size to "7 inch" by "5 inch" then grab the part you want

The way I tend to do it is ... open a new document at 7x5 then use the place option in the menu and it will fill the new document , should you need to crop or zoom use the transform tool or (ctrl & t if you know keyboard shortcuts ) and press shift and move the corner out to the cropped size.

Hope this helps

Just tried this, neat little idea takes the guess work out of cropping
Amazing what you can learn here - Thanks.
