I am looking for some help, I have been asked to supply 2 of my photos, which are going to be made into some large posters. They will be approx 6 feet in size.
I have never done anything like this before. I will be using photoshop elements.Do I go into image then resize to the size of the poster.
Any help would be apriciated

Basically yes but I would suggest using somthing like Alien Skin Blow Up to upsize the pic - it does a better job than the built in re-size. Final quality will depend on the resolution & quality of your original file. If original is RAW make sure you do the sharpening after re-size and not before.

They will be from jpegs, and what resolution should I save them.I normally save at 300dpi.Do i do my editing, resize and then sharpen?

You are better doing the re-size from a raw file as your JPEG will be lossy which will have an impact on quality when upsizing to the size you mentioned. However, if your original file is 300dpi then you are in a better position than having a 72dpi image off your phone (some people have deluded expectations!).
Even though your original JPEG will have some amount of sharpening you will need extra sharpening on the re-sized file - with the software I mentioned you can add the sharpening amount when doing the re-size.

Hi Ady n
they will be from jpeg, as i was covering a football match as got a really good celibration shot which the team want blown up. I would loved to have a RAW file but needed the speed for action shots.I will try and get a hold on the software you mentioned

A note on resolution - Blackburn market in Lancashire has just had a multi million pound revamp and the stalls have backdrops relevant to their produce on 10'X3' panels. I don't know who paid for these backdrops and I cannot believe anyone would but the artwork seems to have been sourced from a camera phone - you can see the pixalation from over 50' away - it really is that bad! I was there last week with my repro guy and one of the studio artists and we were gobsmacked!!!!

I saw a recent test and the difference between third party software and photoshop was negligible, the newer versions of PS have improved the resizing a lot.

Shooting raw should not slow your FPS down that much as long as you are not using a £7.99 CF card! - suggest you shoot raw+JPG where possible but you will get varied opinion on this matter.
Check for latest version of the software plug-in I mentioned as I think it may be up to version 2. All about the algorithms used in the re-size which result in a better end result than the built in algorithms used in PS. Not saying the software is a must but just a suggestion for a higher quality end result.
