Hi there,

Possibly a slightly strange/random one, but I need to know the diameter of the rear element on Nikon F mount lenses. (I don't know if they're all standard or if there's some variation?). Any chance someone with some Nikon lenses could measure it for me? Thanks!

Mainly interested in FX, but it'd be handy to know both (didn't realise they were different sizes). Ta.

Surely it would be incredibly difficult to measure seeing as the lens always tapers in towards the mount?

Could be talking complete b*ll*x but doesn't it depend on the lens?

I (vaguely) recall that the lens have different sized rear elements, but I don't have any to hand at work so can't advise...

You might both be right, I don't know a lot about the Nikon lenses (only ever owned Canon). I was just basing this on having a quick look at my EF/EF-S lenses, all of which seem to have about the same size back element which is pretty much flush with the back of the mount to easy to measure with a ruler. If the rear element is further in the barrel, the diameter of the opening at the mount would be fine.

Sounds like you're up to something interesting?

Yes, what are you up to?

The "throat" (whatever that refers to precisely) of the mount is 44mm, for both FX and DX lenses. See Wikipedia.

As someone said above, the actual rear element size depends on the lens. My 85/1.8 has a bigger rear element than my 50/1.8, which in turn has a bigger rear element than my 70-300/4.5-5.6. All of these are FX lenses.
